Mayor Wanda Williams and City Council President Danielle Bowers unveiled the new street name for a section of Walnut Street.

Another week of news in Harrisburg has come and gone, and, as always, we’ve been here to cover it all. Wondering what happened at City Council on Tuesday, why Walnut Street has a new name, or what films will play at this year’s Moviate Film Festival? Find all the answers, below.

An Allison Hill development project received approval on Tuesday by Harrisburg City Council, our reporting found. Radon Construction will transform the long-abandoned building at 100 N. 13th St. into apartment units.

TheBurg Podcast celebrates culture in this month’s episode. From soccer culture to AAPI culture to the culture of family-owned restaurants, the May edition’s guests cover it all.

The Central PA Unity Cup, planned for May 12 to 21, will bring together culturally diverse teams for a soccer tournament, our online story reported. Nine teams representing countries from around the globe will compete.

We’re proud that we recently received numerous press awards for our reporting, design, art and podcast. It’s the day-to-day work of providing local news to the community that keeps us going. In that spirit, please find a summary of our weekly news coverage, listed and linked below.

Artsfest will return to Harrisburg’s Riverfront Park on May 28 through 30, our online story reported. The annual event will feature handcrafted wares for sale, food trucks and live music.

TheBurg received 17 individual and group Keystone Media Awards, a peer-reviewed contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Foundation. To view our award-winning work, click here.

The Canoe Club of Greater Harrisburg offers a place for both beginners and experienced paddlers to find community while enjoying time on the water, our magazine story reported.

Capital Region Water broke ground on a stormwater management project at the Camp Curtin Branch YMCA, our online story reported. The “Big Green Block” project will include the construction of systems to help prevent stormwater runoff from overwhelming the sewer system.

Comcast and Harrisburg partnered to offer a discount on internet services to low-income residents, our online story reported. Through the “Affordable Connectivity Program,” households can receive a discount of up to $30 a month.

An e-sports gaming facility will open soon in downtown Harrisburg, our online story reported. Professional e-sports team, The Susquehanna Soniqs, envision their facility, The LAN Center, as a hub for gaming in the area.

Harrisburg is in the middle of a major road construction project to transform N. 2nd Street from one-way to two-way traffic. In our magazine story, hear from officials and residents on how they feel about the project.

Harrisburg is seeking summer employees to staff its parks and pool for the season, our online story reported. The city plans to open the Jackson Lick pool on June 13.

The Harrisburg Transportation Center will receive $634,525 in federal funding for a new heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) system, our reporting found. Much of the existing system was installed over two decades ago and need to be replaced, according to the city.

SoMa block parties to return to Harrisburg for the summer with drinks, music, food

It’ll soon be time again for warm summer nights spent in downtown Harrisburg.

SoMa block parties are returning to the city on May 19 with food, drinks and entertainment.

“They are a really great community event and a fun place to be,” said Sara Bozich, whose marketing company organizes the events. “It’s like discovering this little secret part of Harrisburg.”

The block parties will take place in the SoMa, “South of Market,” neighborhood, on S. 3rd Street, between Market and Chestnut streets. During the parties, the block will be closed to vehicle traffic.

Block parties will run through October and feature food trucks, live music and vendors. Tasting rooms Sip@17 and Sip@soma will be open, along with taproom Boneshire Taps@SoMa. There will also be at least one non-alcoholic vendor present. Stash Vintage x The Midtown Dandy, located on S. 3rd Street, will be open during the event, as well.

The May block party will feature East End Brewing Co., Mark and Val’s Wine, Pour Man’s Brewing Co., Englewood Brewing, Tröegs Independent Brewing and Boneshire Taps@SoMa. Live music will be performed by Nate Myers & the Aces. The Cheesesteak Guy and Walk-O Taco will serve food on site, and Reign & Taij’s Homemade Lemonade will offer a non-alcoholic drink option. Art by Vibrant Flow Creations and Reina 76 Artist will be on display, and vendors Moonrise Candle Co. and Why Knot will sell their creations.

The SoMa Block Party Series will take place on the following dates:

  • Thursday, May 19
  • Thursday, June 30
  • Thursday, July 28
  • Thursday, Aug. 25
  • Thursday, Sept. 29
  • Thursday, Oct. 20

All events run from 7 to 10 p.m and are free to attend.

Street parking is available on Market, Chestnut and 4th streets, among others in the area. Parking is free after 5 p.m. in most of downtown Harrisburg.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

The Broad Street Market’s sign was repaired and reinstalled this week.

Better get out and enjoy the sunny weather while you can! It might not last long. This week’s news covered several spring and summery events, such as outdoor concerts, bike sharing and gardening. Find it all, linked below.

Bike sharing will return to Harrisburg this summer under Tri-County Regional Planning Commission, our online story reported. The previous bike share program was halted due to COVID.

The Broad Street Market’s iconic sign was reinstalled this week, after suffering significant damage over a year ago, our reporting found.

Capital Region Water is set to receive a significant loan from The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority, known as PENNVEST, our online story reported. The funds will help CRW repair and replace water supply systems throughout Dauphin County.

On Earth Day, volunteers celebrated by cleaning up a portion of the Capital Area Greenbelt, our online story reported. The Capital Area Greenbelt Association stressed the importance of residents pitching in to keep the parks beautiful.

Harrisburg began paving N. 2nd Street this week, taking another step forward in a project to transform the road from one-way to two-way, our online story reported. Their next step in the project will include constructing medians.

The Harrisburg School District announced that it will move its 5th grade students from the middle school level back to the elementary level, our reporting found. According to the district, there have been negative declines from 4th to 5th grade in academic and behavioral data.

Hauson “Chops” Green is a barber at Heads Up barbershop on N. 6th Street. But more than that, he is a mentor to young men in the Uptown community. Read more, in our magazine story.

KALEO is set to perform in Riverfront Park on Aug. 17 as part of Harrisburg University’s summer concert series, our online story reported. For the summer concert, KALEO will be joined by punk band White Reaper.
