Harrisburg recovers thousands of dollars in unclaimed property; encourages residents to search

State Treasurer Stacy Garrity and City Council vice president Lamont Jones, along with other city and state officials, hold a check for unclaimed property.

Harrisburg has recovered thousands of dollars from the state.

City Council vice president Lamont Jones on Thursday shared that the city has received $94,772 in unclaimed property owed to the municipality, during a press conference with PA Treasurer Stacy Garrity.

“We really are proud to accept this on behalf of the city,” Jones said.

Garrity said that the commonwealth has more than $5 billion in unclaimed property and that one out of every 10 people has money owed to them. In Harrisburg, there is over $41 million owed to individual residents and organizations.

Unclaimed property can consist of dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, rebates, insurance policies, and more, she said.

“I’m thrilled that this money, which has always belonged here, can now be put to use to make a big difference for everyone who calls Harrisburg home,” Garrity said. “I encourage everyone to search for unclaimed property.”

City Council will hold an event on Aug. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Hamilton Health Center in Harrisburg to help people find unclaimed property.
