TheBurg received 22 individual and group Keystone media awards this week, the greatest number we have ever received. Take a look at our online article to see which stories won awards in this contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Foundation.

The Civic Club of Harrisburg is holding an online silent auction to raise funds after it was dealt a financial blow from COVID and recent vandalism, our reporting found. President Marybeth Lehtimaki hopes the community will support them in a time of need.

Dauphin County placed a ballot drop box in downtown Harrisburg in preparation for the upcoming municipal primary, our online story reported. Elections staff has begun to mail out almost 15,000 requested ballots for the May 18 primary, according to the county.

Denim Coffee Company plans to open at a new downtown Harrisburg location on Monday, our online story reported. The shop is the third to open in the state, with existing cafés in Carlisle and Chambersburg.

Harrisburg’s Reservoir Park

The Harrisburg community has some exciting new initiatives, projects and entertainment in store, many announced this past week. If you missed any of our coverage, we have it all listed and linked, below.

Artist Natalie Dohman was featured in Bob’s Art Blog. Dohman shares her experience creating with a unique condition, synesthesia.

DTLR, a lifestyle apparel store, recently returned to their shop in downtown Harrisburg after an expansion and renovation, our online story reported. The store, one of the largest retailers in the city, offers shoes and clothing from brands like Nike, Adidas and Timberland.

Electric vehicles were added to Harrisburg’s fleet, with plans to add many more over the next five years, our reporting found. The city also cut the ribbon on new EV charging stations on City Island on Thursday.

Harrisburg banned water shut-offs for a month, through mid-May, our reporting found. The temporary ban adds to the city’s existing eviction moratorium.

Harrisburg School District officials announced plans for summer school, during a board meeting on Monday night. The district will hold programs for students interested in enrichment or credit recovery, our online story reported.

Harrisburg University’s $100 million building project took a big step forward this past weekend, our reporting found. A crew assembled a sky-high tower crane at the construction site to help erect the 11-story academic building.

Historic City Gardens plans to hold a series of tours this spring and summer in the Midtown neighborhood. Director Faye Deckter said the goal is to promote urban gardening and beautification, our reporting found.

Live music returns to the Harrisburg area after a long hiatus due to the pandemic. Our online story details which local venues are reopening and who’ll be playing.

Open Stage announced the return of live performances to its downtown theater, our reporting found. They will begin with a series of concerts, beginning in late May with a Judy Garland celebration entitled, “Over the Rainbow: the Songs of Judy Garland.”

PA Farm Show traditional foods will be available to the community at a “Spring Food Fest” in May, our online story reported. According to the PA Department of Agriculture, the fest will include favorites from the PA Dairymen’s Association, PA Livestock Association, PA Mushroom Farmers and others.

Parks in Harrisburg may soon face changes to become more organically maintained, our online story reported. The city received a $25,000 check from Stonyfield Organic, GIANT and Non-Toxic Neighborhoods to make parks safer and greener.

Potholes can now be reported to the city through an online mapping system, our online story reported. Public works department officials said they plan to use the data to address road damage.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Midtown Cinema is reopening to the public.

Tonight is 3rd in the Burg, and a special one at that. The Broad Street Market will participate for the first time this year, staying open late on Friday with select vendors and live music. Head out and enjoy what the city has to offer, but not before catching up on this past week’s news, listed and linked, below.

TheBurg took home a number of awards in the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Foundation’s annual advertising contest. See what ads placed in the top spots, in our online story.

Harrisburg City Council rolled out a new affordable housing program on Tuesday, our reporting found. The program seeks to incentivize affordable development by providing benefits like tax abatement and zoning relief. Council also approved a large apartment building and parking garage project for Midtown.

Dauphin County’s elections office moved to a new, larger building in Swatara Township, our online story reported. Officials say the building is four times the size of the former space in the county’s administration building and will increase their capacity to process mail-in ballots.

Gamut Theatre is back to offering in-person performances, our columnist writes. They are welcoming back audiences for “2 by Strindberg,” a mashup of two of August Strindberg’s one-act plays: “The Stronger” and “The Outcast.”

Harrisburg’s eviction moratorium was extended for another 30 days, through mid-May. The declaration protects those who can’t pay rent due to the pandemic, our online story reported.

Home sales were up in March, starting spring off strong in the Harrisburg area, our online story reported. Overall, sales totaled 612 houses last month, compared to 568 units in March 2020, according to the Greater Harrisburg Association of Realtors.

Midtown Cinema is welcoming back movie-goers for first-run films, starting this weekend, our online story reported. The theater is operating at a limited capacity and still offering private screenings.

The Harrisburg YWCA’s “Race Against Racism” will go virtual this year and include an educational component for runners. Photo from 2019 race.

Boneshire Brew Works is opening a taproom, “Taps@SoMa,” in downtown Harrisburg at the former “Sip@SoMa.” They plan to open on April 7, offering their line of craft beer from their main facility on Derry Street, our online story reported.

CASA Pennsylvania is an organization that caters to reworking the structures that serve—and don’t serve—Black and brown immigrants, especially those from Latin American countries. Volunteers seek to provide a long-term, not a temporary, solution. Read more in our magazine story.

The COVID-19 vaccine will be available to all Pennsylvanians by April 19, the state Department of Health and the COVID-19 Task Force announced this week. They plan to accelerate vaccine distribution and increase allocations to pharmacies, our online story reported.

Darius Davis, a local artist, recently opened Midtown Art Supplies, offering a range of artistic tools to those in the community, our online story reported. He hopes his shop, located inside L&L Beauty Supply, will fill a need for artists in the area.
