The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Harrisburg City Council held its first legislative session of the year on Tuesday to discuss the 2022 proposed amended budget.

Happy Black History Month to all of our readers! In our new issue of the magazine, you can read stories highlighting Black history, culture and community. Find a few below, as well, as you catch up on this week’s local news.

Accessibility is a priority for Harrisburg City Council, which is trying to make meetings more inclusive, our reporting found. For their first legislative session of the year on Tuesday, council had a new Kid’s Corner, to better allow parents to bring children to meetings, and a sign language interpreter.

African Americans haven’t always had the easiest time studying their genealogy, as they’ve faced barriers to documenting their lives. But now, social media, digitization and DNA are restoring forgotten stories to the American experience, our magazine story reported.

Central Pennsylvania youth soccer clubs have collaborated to form an advisory board to better recruit and train regional young male soccer players, our online story reported. The group will support the creation of the Men’s Hershey FC National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) Team and the Central Pennsylvania United Under 23 Team (Central Penn United U-23).

A drive-through COVID-19 testing center opened in Dauphin County on Wednesday, our online story reported. Tests will be offered for free on the campus of the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Dr. Lori Suski was named by the Court of Common Pleas as the new receiver for the Harrisburg School District, our online story reported. Suski fills the position that Dr. Janet Samuels previously occupied before announcing her resignation in January.

Harrisburg’s new administration presented its proposed, amended 2022 budget to City Council on Tuesday, our reporting found. The general fund budget, $69.9 million for 2022, is a $10 million decrease from last year’s spending plan.

Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC announced new board chairs, officers and members of the board of directors, our online story reported. For 2022, G. Greg Gunn will serve as the chair of the Chamber’s board of directors, while Casey Khuri will serve as the chair of the board for CREDC.

Ice & Fire Festival will return to Harrisburg in March, our reporting found. The event will feature over 50 ice sculptures, fire dancers, an ice slide and a street festival.

The mayor and City Council’s relationship has historically been less than ideal in Harrisburg. As Mayor Wanda Williams assumes her new position, our editor hopes for more harmony between the city’s executive and legislative branches.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Harrisburg Young Professionals announced Meghan Bachmore as their new executive director.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

At an open house, Harrisburg residents and activists voiced concerns to PennDOT about a Market Street rehab  project.

We are in the thick of winter here in Harrisburg with temperatures that seem to just keep dropping. This weekend, stay warm and stay up to date on local news, which is listed and linked, below.

Arepa House recently opened in downtown Harrisburg, bringing authentic Venezuelan food to the area, our magazine story reported. The restaurant offers various types of arepa sandwiches to choose from, each featuring a varied combination of meat, cheeses, beans, plantains, avocados and/or veggies.

Blogger Bob shares last year’s highlights from the local art world in this first installment of a two-part blog. Take a look at the best exhibits of 2021, here.

Our Burg Review featured Narcisse Theatre’s new show “Kill Keller.” In the play, writer Paul Hood reopens wounds and bares his painful childhood.

Capital Blue Cross has some tips for how to handle stress and strengthen mental health. Find ways to lower stress levels, here.

Carolina Harvey of Susquehanna Township became the first Latina to host the long-running A&E television network series, “Hoarders” in 2021, our magazine story reported. On a day-to-day basis, Harvey helps clients tidy their homes through her business, Cure The Clutter.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

This building at 213 Locust St., Harrisburg, will become a small apartment building.

It looks like more snow and chilly days are headed our way. That makes it the perfect time to curl up at home with the January issue of the magazine. While you’re at it, catch up on this week’s local news, below.

Animal Advocates of South Central PA challenged community members to go vegan for 30 days in January. In our magazine story, read about the benefits of veganism.

Breaking the Chainz opened a resource center in Uptown Harrisburg for community members to access help in the areas of trauma, health, addiction, etc., our online story reported.

TheBurg Podcast is ditching the common phrase “New Year, New You,” and proposing an update, “New Year, New Issues.” Listen to this month’s edition to hear from Seth Dellinger of Animal Advocates of South Central PA, local author Fred Burton and Harrisburg runner Clare Flannery on a number of issues, plus our editor’s “The Most Harrisburg Thing!”

Clare Flannery is a 65-year-old runner who just completed her fifth marathon—the iconic Boston Marathon—in October. It’s a tough marathon to qualify for, so how did she do it? Find out in our magazine story.

Harrisburg University received a major donation for its proposed sustainable agriculture center in downtown Harrisburg, our online story reported. Carlisle-based The GIANT Company will donate $1 million to HU’s planned 23,000-square-foot building that, according to GIANT, may break ground later this year.

Harrisburg Young Professionals announced its new board president, Jade Honey, our online story reported. Honey will help lead the hiring of a new executive director, which the organization hasn’t had in two years.

Harristown Enterprises recently purchased the building that long housed The Plum, a clothing store in downtown Harrisburg, our reporting found. They plan to convert the building into boutique apartments.

Home sales and prices in Harrisburg both increased last month, our reporting found. In the three-county region, 774 homes sold last month compared to 761 in December 2020.

Live music will return to Riverfront Park as part of Harrisburg University’s summer concert series, this year, our reporting found. Partnering with Tröegs Independent Brewing, HU will kick off the series by presenting bands Lord Huron and First Aid Kit.

The MLK Day of Service committee has numerous volunteer opportunities for people to participate in on the holiday, our reporting found. At a press conference, they urged community members to spend their day off as a day on.

PennDOT added a second time slot for an open house next week for its planned Market Street Bridge rehabilitation project, our online story reported. PennDOT plans to rehabilitate the historic arches of the bridge.
