Shalom House plans to open a community drop-in center in Allison Hill

Let’s hope this is the last wintry weekend of the season here in Harrisburg. Lucky for you, we have plenty of reading material to keep you entertained and up-to-date on all the local happenings while you avoid the snow at home. All of this week’s coverage is listed, below.

As Afghan refugees begin to resettle in central Pennsylvania, local organizations and agencies are stepping up to help, our magazine story reported. This may include finding and outfitting a home, employment services, classes in English as a Second Language and referrals for other needs.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Home 231 staff cut the ribbon on their reopened Harrisburg restaurant.

Our March edition of TheBurg magazine came out this week with lots of stories about people doing good in their communities. Pick up a copy while you’re out at the Ice & Fire Festival this weekend. As always, stay up to date on local news, with our recap of the week, below.

The Broad Street Market has some new vendors selling everything from burgers to smoothies to Asian cuisine and skincare products. Read about the people behind the businesses and what they have to offer, in our online story.

In his column, our editor compares the state’s relationship with the city of Harrisburg to having a bad neighbor. He implores the state government to own up to the responsibility that it has to this community.

Dauphin County paused its application process for the state and federally funded Emergency Rental and Utility Assistance Program as it nears the end of its funds, our online story reported. The county has disbursed over $16 million of the total $18 million that was allotted.

Our editor sets the tone and shares the background of our “Doing Good” special section of the March magazine in his Editor’s Note.

A GoFundMe created by a Dauphin County resident has raised thousands of dollars for Ukrainian families in need, our reporting found. Agata Czopek, organizer of the fundraiser, is originally from Poland, where many Ukrainians are seeking refuge.

The owners want to emphasize that they offer co-working space for many different types of businesses and jobs, not primarily for startups, our online story reported.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade is returning to downtown Harrisburg with music, dance groups, floats and more, our online story reported. The parade will start at 2 p.m. on March 19, with a four-mile race kicking off at noon.

A new Susquehanna Art Museum exhibit zeroes in on the rich bounty of American landscapes from the early-19th century through the late-20th century. In our magazine story, read more about the “In Nature’s Studio: Two Centuries of American Landscape” exhibit, on display now through May 22.

The Zembo Shrine in Harrisburg is off the sales market, as the fraternal organization has chosen to keep its building, our online story reported. After five years of looking for a new owner, the Zembo Shriners decided to restore the 92-year-old building as an events venue.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Development group Vice Capital purchased this block of N. 6th St. They plan to demolish existing buildings and build a new apartment building.

This week brought lots of stories of new local businesses, development projects and exciting partnerships between organizations. If you missed any of our coverage from this week, or need a new restaurant, brewery or art gallery to check out, look no further.

Chef Nadine Graham has always dreamed of opening her own restaurant, our magazine story reported. While she has operated Porters House in the Broad Street Market for years, she just recently opened her first standalone shop on N. 6th Street in Harrisburg.

Dauphin County awarded its annual gaming grants to local businesses and nonprofits this week, our reporting found. Over $8 million was allocated to local infrastructure, emergency services, health and public safety and public interest projects, among others.

Development group Vice Capital recently purchased a block of N. 6th Street near the under-construction federal courthouse, our reporting found. The firm plans to build a 40-unit apartment building and startup business workspace for minority entrepreneurs.

The Frederick Douglass Driving Tour is not only educational, but also timely, given that it’s Black History Month. In our magazine story, find ideas for a road trip through Maryland with a focus on Black history.

The Harrisburg School District named a new assistant superintendent, Dr. Marisol Craig, at a board meeting on Tuesday, our online story reported. Craig previously served as the district’s director of virtual learning.

The High Road Brewing Co. taproom recently opened in Mechanicsburg, featuring IPAs, pilsners, lagers, stouts, etc., from a variety of area breweries, our magazine story reported.

Italian Lake is undergoing a dredging process, which will remove built-up sedimentation and waste, our online story reported. According to the city, portions of the lake may be closed off to the public during the two-week operation.

Nyeusi Gallery recently opened in Midtown Harrisburg featuring Black art. In our magazine story, read about how the gallery has become a gathering place for the community.

Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding visited Good Brotha’s Book Café in Harrisburg to discuss food insecurity and racial injustice, our online story reported. Redding said that the department is prioritizing initiatives to increase access to fresh food for urban communities.

Philadelphia author Kareem Rosser visited Harrisburg on Thursday for a book signing and virtual discussion, our online story reported. In his book, “Crossing the Line: A Fearless Team of Brothers and the Sport that Changed Their Lives Forever,” Rosser shares his story of growing up in the inner city of Philadelphia and becoming a national polo champion.

Wendy Allen has dedicated her entire career to painting one subject: Abraham Lincoln. The artist has painted the former president over 500 times, in different colors, angles and styles, according to our magazine story.

Wrestling has been hot in central Pennsylvania for years, with District III fielding strong representation in the state tournament each year, our magazine story reported. A newer phenomenon, however, is that high school wrestlers now have a way to turn their success into longer careers through Mixed Martial Arts.

Tour de Belt will return to an in-person format in Harrisburg this year.

TheBurg Podcast debuted a special Valentine’s Day episode this week. The show reveals the hidden gems of Harrisburg, according to nearly 25 of our podcast guests from the past year. Curious? Listen, here.

Chosen Friends Masonic Lodge’s legacy is deeply tied to Black history in Harrisburg, our magazine story reported. The fraternal organization has provided a sense of belonging and brotherhood to local men for decades.

Emmanuel Nsingani’s earthy emotional voice ranges from guttural lows to sobbing highs in his Afro-jazz music, our magazine story reported. He writes and sings lyrics in his native Lari, a language from the Republic of Congo, where he was born.

The February edition of TheBurg Podcast gives voice to people or causes representing minorities. Tune in to hear from three extraordinary local women.

Harrisburg, along with Dauphin County and nonprofit Impact Harrisburg, will conduct a disparity study to determine how and where the city can provide more opportunities to diverse businesses and contractors. The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Harrisburg City Council held three budget hearings this week.

Here’s to a sunny weekend in Harrisburg! As the city begins to defrost, get out and enjoy a taste of spring. Don’t miss out on all of our local news coverage from this week, listed below.

American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) money will be the topic of discussion at a series of meetings that Harrisburg plans to hold, our online story reported. The city will host five meetings to gather input from residents on how they want to see the millions in federal assistance utilized.

In Bob’s Art Blog the theme is love, fitting for the upcoming holiday. He highlights the “Love, Love Market” featuring hand-made ceramics, jewelry and flower arrangements in Carlisle this weekend.

TheBurg Podcast came out today and features interviews with three fascinating local women. Hear from Dr. Kimeka Campbell, founder of the Harrisburg Black Newsbeat, Sue Kunisky of Visit Hershey & Harrisburg, and Wendy Allen of Lincoln into Art.

Dave Madsen, a Harrisburg City Council member announced that he will toss his hat into the ring for one of the city’s newly drawn seats in the state House of Representatives, our reporting found. Madsen will seek the Democratic nomination for the new 104th legislative district.

“Echoes of Voices of the Eighth,” produced by Sankofa African American Theatre Company, opens on Friday night at Gamut Theatre. According to our reviewer, it offers a night of history, depth and enlightenment. Read more about the show, in our magazine story.

Eric Epstein, a long-time activist, and Susquehanna Township Commissioner Justin Fleming both said that they would seek the Democratic nomination for the PA House in the newly redrawn 105th legislative district, our online story reported.

A GoFundMe raised thousands of dollars to support two young girls whose parents, Meredith Greene and Tyler Thames, were killed in a shooting this week in Harrisburg. Within a day, the fundraiser had garnered over $20,000, our reporting found.

Harrisburg City Council held the first of three budget workshops, where they discussed the public safety budget, our reporting found. The administration proposed allocating funding to new positions within the police and fire bureaus.

Harrisburg’s Federal Building has a new plan as an upscale apartment building and nightlife complex, our online story reported. Justin Etzin, principal of Global Ocean Investments Ltd., said that he plans to transform the building into “The Federal,” a 288-unit “luxury” apartment building, plus restaurants and bars.

Home sales in Harrisburg were mostly flat in January, but prices were up, our online story reported. For the three-county region, sales totaled 499 housing units compared to 508 in January 2021, but the median sales price rose to $211,900 versus $194,700 in the year-ago period.

Riodine, a Russian/American band, recently released their debut album, “Practical Men,” our magazine story reported. The musical stylings of the members of Riodine have been influenced by the harder rock music of the 1970s.
