Harristown Enterprises, local officials and community members cut the ribbon on The Menaker apartment building on Market Square.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Central PA Branch will host an event called “Stop WW3,” to foster peace, our online story reported. The event will be held at the Hadee Mosque on Saturday, Sept. 10—the eve of the 9/11 anniversary.

Capital Rebirth and Friends of Midtown will host “Star City Coffee and Arts Festival” to showcase local coffee shops, artists and yoga studios on Sept. 3 in Midtown Harrisburg, our online story reported. Organizers hope the event will support local businesses while bringing the community together. 

Dauphin County and Strawberry Square will partner next month for “After the Disaster,” an event to help educate residents on emergency resources available in the county, our online story reported. The event will be held on Sept. 8, and governmental and nonprofit organizations will attend to showcase their services.

Dionn Reneé, a Harrisburg artist, won a global competition to have her work featured as part of the movie marketing for Sony’s “The Woman King,” our reporting found. See Reneé’s art and read more about the competition, here.

The East Shore Diner celebrated 38 years of business with family and loyal customers on Thursday before closing its doors, our online story reported. The diner had to move to make space for PennDOT’s Capital Beltway expansion project, but plans to reopen in the spring in Mechanicsburg.

Evolve Youth Trades Academy educates young people about productive career paths that involve using their hands and their minds, our magazine story reported. They provide students in the Harrisburg area with training and hands-on experience in the disciplines of carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical and graphic design.

“The Good Boss” perfects the genre of cringe humor and leaves you unsure which characters to root for in the end, our movie reviewer says in her column. The film plays at Midtown Cinema in Harrisburg this month.

Good Brotha’s Book Café announced that it would move its operations from its current Midtown location to inside the McCormick Riverfront Library, our online story reported. Owner Stefan Hawkins said that he will close the N. 3rd Street shop to focus resources on the library café.

Kipona Festival will return to Harrisburg this Labor Day weekend, our online story reported. The festival will include food trucks, live music and a laser light show.

Local artist Linda Billet showed off her community mosaic, now displayed in the Harrisburg High School-John Harris campus.

The Broad Street Market is looking for a new executive director, our online story reported. The position has remained open since Josh Heilman, the former director, stepped down.

The Capital Area Beekeeper’s Association spreads awareness about the importance of bees to the environment, our magazine story reported. Over 200 Harrisburg-area residents belong to CABA, and the group continues to grow.

Capital Region Water board of directors approved a plan to reduce pollutants flowing into waterways, our reporting found. The agreement includes projects to help the city’s sewer infrastructure capture at least 85% of system flow during wet weather.

Construction on N. 2nd Street in Harrisburg is moving forward, as the portion of the roadway from Maclay to Division streets will convert to two-way traffic early next month. The city expects the total project to be completed by mid-fall, our online story reported.

Our editor says that the announcement that Knead Pizza in Harrisburg has closed is a lose-lose situation. In his editorial, read why he sees the closure as a big loss for the city.

Hall’s Ice Cream in Perry County has crafted flavors for ice-cream lovers for 75 years, our magazine story reported. Most recently, owner Matthew Hall stepped up to continue operating the family business.

Harrisburg City Council on Tuesday night approved a land development plan for a five-story residential and retail structure at 512-514 N. 2nd St., our online story reported. Developer Derek Dilks plans to demolish the two dilapidated buildings that currently sit on the property and build a new structure with first-floor retail space and seven apartments above.

Harrisburg School District officials unveiled a new mosaic in the Harrisburg High School-John Harris Campus, our online story reported. The mosaic was created with help from community members and students at the city’s Artsfest and assembled by local artist Linda Billet.

Harrisburg will host a parade on Saturday to celebrate World Series champions, the Michael Stepp RBI of Greater Harrisburg softball team, our online story reported. A celebratory picnic will follow the parade.

The Journey Church in Harrisburg held a “Back to School Block Party” on Saturday, our online story reported. The church offered free haircuts, clothing and 375 backpacks full of school supplies.

Knead Pizza decided that it would close both its N. 3rd Street and Broad Street Market locations, our online story reported. The news came shortly after Knead employees announced a plan to form a union.

Midtown Redevelopment LLC held the first of three public information sessions to share its plan, for dozens of long-empty lots in the unfinished Capitol Heights and MarketPlace neighborhoods, our reporting found. The plan includes apartments, townhouses, a grocery store and commercial spaces.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Cathedral in Harrisburg will host an anti-violence event, “PA Prays: Forging Justice and Peace out of Violence,” on Sept. 18, our online story reported. At the event, a blacksmith will reconfigure guns into gardening tools and jewelry.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Community members and artists painted and hung a mural on Pastorante’s boarded-up window in Midtown Harrisburg.

As fall inches closer, there are several great ways to enjoy the last bit of summer in Harrisburg this weekend. HU Presents is set up for two concerts this weekend in Riverfront Park, Dauphin County’s Cultural Fest will take place on City Island and 3rd in the Burg is happening tonight! Bethesda Mission celebrated the opening of its new women’s mission on Thursday, our online story reported. The newly constructed building offers a place for Harrisburg women in crisis to find refuge and support.

The Broad Street Market is featured in a new Apple TV series, “Stuffed with Steve Ford,” our online story reported. The show, created by the Pennsylvania Tourism Office, will premiere at the market on Friday night, in the courtyard.

Dauphin County’s Cultural Fest will return to City Island in Harrisburg this weekend, our reporting found. The event will include musical and dance performances, as well as ethnic food trucks and other vendors.

The Dauphin-Middle Paxton Historical Society is working to rebuild after a fire destroyed its building and much of its historical artifacts. In our magazine story, read about what’s next for the organization and about its gala planned for next month.

Our editor, in an editorial, shares how despite PennDOT’s new efforts to deter trucks from driving under the Front Street railroad bridge, many trucks are still getting stuck. PennDOT isn’t doing enough to address the issue, he says.

Gamut Theatre honored a former student actor who passed away in 2020 by naming a legacy fund in her honor, our online story reported. “Lily’s Legacy Fund” will support the Harrisburg theater’s efforts to increase its accessibility.

The performance represents more than just an anniversary, but a newfound unity and a coming together to preserve the musical genre.

Harrisburg and state Rep. Patty Kim will hand out free backpacks and school supplies to 100 students at the city’s final summer movie night on Friday, our online story reported. At 8 p.m., the city will show “Space Jam: A New Legacy.”

Junior Achievement’s BizTown provides a field trip experience to a simulated town where students test-drive a real workday. In our magazine story, read more about the York organization that prepares students for work readiness, financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

Pastorante, a restaurant in Harrisburg, is looking a little brighter after community members and artists hung and painted a mural on the front of the building, our reporting found. The mural covers a window that was boarded up after a shooting incident shattered the window last week.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Harrisburg School District employees, represented by the local union, AFSCME Council 13, protested their wages at a board meeting on Tuesday.

Australian musician Courtney Barnett is the focus of director Danny Cohen’s film, “The Anonymous Club.” Read what our movie reviewer has to say about the film, here.

“Bigs in Blue” is a national initiative designed by Big Brothers Big Sisters to pair youth with law enforcement officer mentors. In our magazine story, read about one pair’s experience in the program.

TheBurg Podcast this month is chock-full of conversations about time. Tune in to hear news from the Harrisburg Area YMCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region and Harristown.

The Harrisburg Coin Club will host its 60th annual coin show at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Harrisburg on Sept. 16 to 17, our online story reported. The group was founded in 1950 as a way for coin collectors to trade, auction and buy old coins and medals.

Harrisburg has had its ups and downs since TheBurg was founded 14 years ago. In his column, our editor reflects on what has changed, for the better and worse, over the years.

Victoria McCallum is not only the founder of Na’toria Marketing and Design Solutions in Harrisburg, she is also a staff sergeant in the Army National Guard and an athlete, our magazine story reported.
