The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Harrisburg Project Manager Percy Bullock announced the full opening of the new two-way N. 2nd Street.

It’s Friday in Harrisburg, which wraps up another week of news. You can find all of our stories, in bite-sized form, right here, or click the links to read more.

In Burg Bits, we share several nuggets of information that we’ve discovered around town. In our column, find tidbits about the returning bike share program and a new Broad Street Market manager, among other news.

Halloween is just around the corner, and Harrisburg has a new way for families to celebrate with their “Bash at the Brownstone,” our online story reported. The party will take place on Oct. 26, with the city-wide trick or treat the following night.

The Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra is looking forward to its 2022-23 season, especially as it returns to its home, the Forum Auditorium. In our magazine story, get a preview of what’s to come.

Harrisburg will open much of N. 2nd Street to two-way traffic on Thursday, Oct. 13, around noon, our online story reported. Over the past year, construction has taken place on the corridor to convert the one-way road to two-ways and to make it more pedestrian friendly.

Market Square Presbyterian Church’s Arts on the Square kicks off its season with “The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace,” our online story reported. The anti-war musical piece was inspired by the war in Ukraine and the impacts of gun violence.

Midtown Tavern in Harrisburg announced its closure, but its doors may not be shut for long, our online story reported. Local restaurateur Adam Sturges said that he plans to purchase the business and the building.

N. 2nd Street is almost complete, and our editor praises the city for the transformation of the one-way mini highway to a two-way neighborhood road. In his column, he urges Harrisburg to consider similar changes to other city roads.

A past “Family Fishing Day” at Italian Lake

The October issue of our magazine came out this week! We hope you love our spooky cover and fall-themed stories as much as we do. Grab a copy and then catch up on this week’s local news, below.

The Ecumenical Food Pantry has served more than 1.2 million people in the Harrisburg region, our magazine story reported. The outreach recently celebrated its 50th anniversary of combating food insecurity in the community.

Our editor talks about all that TheBurg offers in addition to the magazine, including our online news, podcast and 3rd in the Burg, in his October Editor’s Note.

Family Fishing Day at Italian Lake will offer residents a chance to try their hand at a new sport, our online story reported. A course will teach participants the basics of fishing and provide the supplies to cast a line.

Firefighters from Harrisburg’s Bureau of Fire are stationed in Charleston, S.C., to assist during Hurricane Ian, our online story reported. The firefighters, members of the Pennsylvania Task Force 1, will help with search and rescue efforts.

Harrisburg City Council presented its “Unsung Hero” awards to local community activists and volunteers, our reporting found. Four city residents were recognized at a council meeting on Tuesday.

The Harrisburg School District is moving closer toward reopening the long-vacant Steele Elementary School, our online story reported. At a school board meeting, Receiver Dr. Lori Suski approved a $21.6 million plan for its renovation.

Harrisburg High School-John Harris Campus will receive increased police presence after a fight involving a large group of students took place earlier this week, our online story reported. Officers will conduct wellness checks and help train security officers on responding to situations like these.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

It’s finally feeling like fall in Harrisburg! Before you head out for a crisp stroll through the city or to dinner at one of Harrisburg’s many wonderful restaurants, catch up on this week’s news, below.

Dauphin County announced that three polling places will move for the upcoming election, our online story reported. The county also released information about important dates, mail-in ballots and registering to vote.

Friends of Midtown will hold “Bark for a Park,” a rally requesting a community dog park in the city, our online story reported. The organization is asking the city to take on the project and encouraging residents to sign a petition.

Gov. Tom Wolf  held a ceremonial bill signing for legislation that will widely expand the medical screening panel given to newborn babies. Learn what this bill means to one family, in our online story.

Harrisburg’s N. 2nd Street two-way conversion project is coming closer to completion, our reporting found. The roadway, from Forster to Muench streets is in the process of being paved, and the corridor will switch to two-ways in early October.

The Homeless Memorial Blanket Project, which began in Cumberland County, is now headed to our nation’s capital, and organizers hope to get blankets donated from each state, our online story reported. The project seeks to educate people on the issue of homelessness and give to those in need.

The HUE Invitational will gather on Saturday and Sunday to conclude the largest collegiate e-sports event, created and hosted by Harrisburg University, our online story reported. Teams will play this weekend in the finals for a chance to win $25,000 in scholarship prizes.

Lois Lehrman Grass, a Harrisburg native and long-time arts patron and philanthropist, died this week at age 90, our online story reported. She long supported a host of causes in Harrisburg through her leadership skills, fund-raising, volunteer activities and personal support.

The McCormick Riverfront Library will temporarily close from Sept. 30 to Oct. 19 to complete the last phase of renovations, our online story reported. The library has been working on a project to expand and renovate the property since it broke ground in 2021.

Parks, playgrounds and outdoor spaces in Harrisburg will receive upgrades, thanks to $2 million in local and state grants, our online story reported. The city received grants for Reservoir Park projects, the Paxtang Parkway Trail and an Italian Lake rain garden, among other projects.

PennDOT will begin a 4.8-mile resurfacing project on I-83 in Dauphin County on Sept. 26, our reporting found. The project extends from Cameron Street in Harrisburg, through Swatara Township, to Union Deposit Road in Lower Paxton Township.

Why Not Prosper, a Philly-based organization that assists formerly incarcerated women, cut the ribbon on a new Harrisburg location, our online story reported. The facility, in Allison Hill, will provide short-term housing for those re-entering society after prison.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams and Police Commissioner Thomas Carter swore in seven new officers at Whitaker Center on Wednesday.

We want to thank all of our supporters who attended out first annual Friends of TheBurg Bash on Thursday. The party was a hit! Make sure you don’t miss next year’s event and become a Friend of TheBurg today. As always, all of our news coverage from the week is listed below.

Bro2Go, a Harrisburg nonprofit, received a $5,000 donation from Access Insurance Agency, which serves the commonwealth, our online story reported. With help from the community, the organization has a chance to double the grant.

The Broad Street Market in Harrisburg is searching for a new executive director, and our editor has some thoughts on the role. It may be a much more difficult job than it seems, he says.

TheBurg Podcast for September dives deeper into our recent magazine articles. Featured this month are the stories of a growing local basketball league, a runner whose life was saved by strangers and a nurse who has volunteered at the Harrisburg Marathon for 15 years.

Concerts are in full swing this September with a little something for every music taste. In our Musical Notes column, find out what bands and artists are headed our way.
