Craft Culture: Village Artisans Gallery houses some of the best in PA craftsmanship

Pennsylvania is known for its rich history in American art, home to traditional and contemporary artists who showcase their craft at eclectic galleries across the state.

Cumberland County alone houses over 20 galleries and studios where community members can learn and participate in fine arts and crafts.

One hidden gem, located in the historic village of Boiling Springs, lives with a commitment to preserving American craftsmanship. The Village Artisans Gallery displays a wide selection of blown glass, pottery, turned wood, hand-woven apparel and jewelry, as well as illustrations, calligraphy and more.

“When my family moved to Boiling Springs, I became affiliated with the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen (PGC), where I found my love for stained glass and developed a true appreciation for individual style,” said PJ Heyman, owner and stained glass artist.

Heyman was seeking studio space when her mother mentioned the historic 1875 brick church next door, which was for sale. Interested in the history, they decided to renovate the building to house studio spaces and a gallery.

“We started in the spring of 1995 selling 50 guild members’ work in the gallery,” Heyman said. “Now, over two decades later, we have grown to welcome around 200 artisans from across Pennsylvania and beyond.”

Along with selling fine crafts, her vision for the building included providing studio space for herself and fellow guild member Gay Foltz, a folk art carver and sculptor whose whimsical woodcarvings of cats, Santas and woodland creatures are on display.

“I met PJ through our local chapter of PGC and jumped at the opportunity of having my own studio space at her gallery,” Foltz said. “After 26 years here, I am still branching out (literally, with branches) and trying new techniques to keep my work fresh and inspiring.”

As you walk around the gallery, the “nave” is filled with work including Deborah Hershey’s collages, Royce Yoder’s pottery, Tom Laser’s turned wooden bowls and Jo Alexander’s floral and landscape mosaics, among others. Items range in price and support local master artisans in their craft.

“We want the community to feel inspired when they enter our doors and to be a place where they are able to relax and learn about different types of artform,” Heyman said.

The gallery focuses on selling pieces from local creatives. But, on occasion, Heyman will purchase items from national artists to showcase how geography can influence art.

“American handcrafts are very important as each piece is imprinted personally by the artist and made individually instead of mass-produced,” she said. “We purchase items outright from artists or offer a consignment opportunity where they can earn a percentage of each sale. Either option is keeping craftmanship alive.”

Local Carlisle resident Morgan Plant has been shopping at Village Artisans Gallery for many years and is inspired by the owner’s taste and style.

“When I get an itch for creativity, I come here,” Plant said. “My house is filled with special pieces that PJ has picked out including pottery, paintings, block prints and more. This is my go-to shop for special gifts. I want to share the experience with everyone.”

This September, Village Artisans Gallery will bring back its “Artisans Action Series”—an event series that gives the community an opportunity to meet and learn from their favorite craftsmen. This series will be part of Cumberland County’s “Best Kept Secrets Tour” and begin with jewelry artist Joan Rhodes on Thursday, Sept. 23.

We will be participating in the Cumberland County tour this fall and are welcoming a number of our artists to come into the gallery and demonstrate their craft to customers,” Heyman said. “We look forward to seeing the community again in-person.”

After celebrating the gallery’s 26th anniversary this year, Heyman looks forward to continuing to share her love for art with Cumberland County and beyond.

“I could truly fill a place 10 times this size because of all of the wonderful work out there,” she said. “I look forward to continuing to share my love for fine American crafts with our customers and featuring nice people in our gallery.”

What’s in Your Lunchbox? Upcoming art exhibit will feature stories of culture clash in the cafeteria

The school lunchroom can be a stressful place for kids. Who do you sit with? Whose mom packed them a lunch? Who gets the free lunch?

It’s even more anxiety-inducing when your food doesn’t look like all the other kids’.

In Harrisburg artist Amie Bantz’s upcoming exhibit, she unboxes the shared story that many Asian Americans have had in the cafeteria when their peers react to their traditional Asian food.

“I have a story, my mom has a story, all of my friends have stories,” she said. “I feel like that creates a collective narrative and identity.”

Bantz and other Asian Americans from the community painted about 90 lunchboxes with phrases and short stories from their own experiences with food. The boxes, along with other selections of Bantz’s art, will hang in the Carlisle Arts Learning Center next month.

As a Korean American, Bantz remembers having these “lunchbox moments” as a kid. Some of those memories are a part of the exhibit—like the time she asked her mom, a South Korean immigrant, to make mac and cheese, and she melted a Kraft single on top of white rice. Or there was the time she got in line to get a box of milk at lunch because all of the other kids were doing it, even though she was lactose intolerant, which she said is common among people of Asian descent.

“I really wanted it to be a little bit of humor, a little bit of seriousness, but ultimately just showcasing the Asian American experience in America through this one lens,” Bantz said.

As much as the project was a cathartic experience for Bantz, it was impactful to those from the community who she included, as well. She hosted classes to allow people to share their lunchbox moments and paint them on a lunchbox to be included in the show. The stories, she said, are even more emotional and impactful than she imagined.

“A lot of the folks that came to the workshops, I don’t think they realized that other people had that same moment,” she said. “I want other Asian Americans to be able to walk into that gallery and see all of the lunchboxes and stories and be like ‘oh, these are my people, they get it.’”

Bantz’s show comes on the heels of many instances of Asian hate crimes in the United States during the pandemic. She hopes that her exhibit keeps the conversation around the issue going, while also allowing room for people to giggle and smile a bit.

“Initially, this whole idea was just because I needed to do something to cope—I needed an outlet,” Bantz said. “And then I realized that other people needed an outlet.”

The exhibit will also include an interactive piece for people to share their lunchbox moments, reactions to the exhibit and stories of not fitting in. She hopes that community members of all cultures and races will participate.

“The only way to reduce hate is if we find common ground,” Bantz said. “That’s the whole premise of the show.”

“Lunchbox Moments” will be on display at the Carlisle Arts Learning Center from Aug. 6 to Sept. 18 in their 2^nd floor gallery. For more information, visit Amie Bantz’s website.

Sprocket Mural Works plans two large Allison Hill murals, seeks community input

Pizza Boli’s, at the intersection of 13th and Market streets, will be the site of an upcoming mural created by Sprocket Mural Works.

Two large murals are coming to Harrisburg, and community members are encouraged to offer input on them.

As part of the 2021 Harrisburg Mural Festival, Sprocket Mural Works plans to paint large-scale murals in Allison Hill. One will be located at the corner of 13th and Market streets and others will be on the Mulberry Street Bridge—which will be Sprocket’s largest mural project to date.

“We’d love to hear about the public’s hopes and dreams, for what will be two landmark murals being created this summer,” said Megan Caruso, co-founder and president of the nonprofit Sprocket Mural Works. “Community input is vital to guiding the creative vision for both projects.”

Sprocket has released a community survey to hear from people on what they’d like to see as part of the projects. They will also be at the Allison Hill Farmers Market on July 28 and Aug. 4 to speak with community members directly. According to Sprocket, anyone with ties to Harrisburg is welcome to participate in the survey. However, they especially invite participation from Allison Hill residents since both murals will be in their neighborhood.

Also as part of the mural festival, Sprocket is currently working on a mural in Allison Hill at the Recycle Bicycle building on Chestnut Street and recently completed a planter painting project in Allison Hill.

CoExist Glass Gallery hopes to build community through mosaic mural project in Steelton

A small building on Front Street in Steelton will soon become the canvas for a colorful work of art.

The CoExist Glass Gallery will piece together a mosaic mural this summer, with help from global and local artists and community members.

“It’s my passion to build community,” said Shawn Gold, owner of CoExist. “I wanted to do something that a lot of people could contribute to.”

Gold was inspired after a trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where he met local mosaic artist Natasha Moraga. He loved how she created street art that is accessible to the community and decided to bring that concept to Steelton.

The “CoExist in Kindness” mosaic will cover the building on S. Front Street in Steelton. Artists like Moraga and Carrie Strope, from Nebraska, will contribute to the mural, along with other artists from across the globe.

But Gold really wants the mosaic to reflect the community in Steelton and hopes that residents will participate in the process as well. He especially hopes to involve the youth in the borough.

“Murals bring very positive attributes to the city,” he said. “They create pride and ownership.”

The CoExist Glass Gallery on S. Front St. will be covered in a mosaic mural in late August.

The mural will cover three sides of the building and feature designs including flowers, insects, “Steelton,” and the Golden Gate Bridge, which the old Bethlehem Steel Mill in the borough helped to build, Gold said. Artists will also incorporate the phrase, “A tradition of building bridges.”

Anyone, experienced or not, is invited to submit mosaic art to the gallery, Gold said. On the gallery’s website, they have tutorial videos to learn how to create mosaics. So far, the response from the community and artists around the world has been great, he said.

The gallery is welcoming submissions until July 1. The mural will be started in late August and take about a week to finish.

According to Gold, this is just the start of a series of community projects. CoExist has future plans to create a historic walking tour that will feature mosaic installations throughout the city that highlight historic locations.

They will also hold a Mardi Gras festival in July with food and music.

Gold hopes to partner with local schools to include art programs for youth in Steelton, as well. For him, promoting positivity is key.

“It’s all about creating a spotlight back on Steelton,” he said.

Local artists seek to support each other and bring the community together through art, music events

During the pandemic, Mandy Iglesias found that it was really hard to dance socially distanced.

She tried to keep her salsa and bachata lessons running, but how do you dance without close proximity and locked hands?

Iglesias knew other local artists, dancers and musicians were struggling as well, and she decided to help them out.

On May 15, Iglesias is hosting “Arts in the Park,” a day of music, art and dancing in Reservoir Park. Activities will include an exhibit by artists Reina Wooden (R76), Charles Feathers and Jonathan Frazier. There will also be yoga, sound immersion, T-shirt tie-dyeing, African drumming, dance lessons and a flash mob. Catering from Joe Mama’s kitchen will be onsite, as well.

“I think this is going to be an amazing event in a really good location,” Iglesias said. “People can come out and try something new.”

Iglesias has already held a few similar events in Reservoir Park and hopes to make this a recurring experience. She also hopes to inject new energy into the park, which she believes is underused.

The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Participants may need to pay for some activities.

Wooden and Feathers also wanted to uplift local artists during COVID and kick off Harrisburg’s Artsfest, coming on May 29.

For the second time, the pair will hold an exhibit at the Civic Club of Harrisburg on May 23, from 1 to 5 p.m., featuring up-and-coming artists and musicians.

“We wanted to showcase artists that couldn’t afford to participate in Artsfest,” Wooden said. “This is our way of giving back to the community.”

Twenty local artists will participate in the “Art of the Susquehanna” exhibit, showing and selling their work. There will also be live performances from violinists, trumpeters, pianists and poets. Smoking Ace’s BBQ food truck will be on the premises. According to Wooden, it will be a diverse and eclectic group of artists.

As an artist in Harrisburg, Wooden is excited to see all the arts events that are taking place.

“This is extremely inspiring,” she said. “I’ve always wanted for the local community to come together and create these local venues.”

Artist in Focus: Brad Maurer

Brad Maurer describes getting an engineering degree as “taking a bad turn in life.”

That’s because Brad is, at heart, an illustrator and cartoonist who studied art before breaking bad with an engineering career.

Now retired, he has happily returned to first love, creating art full-time. But Brad doesn’t dream that his work will hang in the great salons of Europe. Instead, he dreams of bugs—and sometimes those bugs say things and act in ways that only can be described as “human.”

Local artist offers supplies to Harrisburg creatives, filling need in neighborhood

As you may have noticed from the numerous stories told by our arts blogger Bob MacGinnes, Harrisburg has a rich and growing creative scene.

But where do all the painters, designers and illustrators get their tools? Where can someone get a paintbrush in Harrisburg?

Up until now, the pickings have been slim, said local artist Darius Davis, who regularly drives out of the city for supplies.

But on Saturday, Davis plans to open Midtown Art Supplies to offer a range of artistic tools to those in the community. The products will be located in a section of L&L Beauty Supply on Reily Street.

“I thought it would be cool if there was a place closer,” Davis said. “I feel like Midtown is a great area with a lot of great art going on.”

Davis said that he will fill his shelves with watercolors, acrylics, oil paints, stencils, pencils, brushes, canvases, drawing pads and resin, among other items. He’s open to purchasing other products by request.

Vivi Sterste, owner of art studio Vivi on Verbeke, said that she’s excited to have a place in walking distance. Sometimes, she finds herself traveling to Mechanicsburg or Norristown for supplies.

“I think it’s a great idea,” she said. “It’s ingenious actually. He’s a spark of inspiration.”

Davis plans to sell some of his art, as well, including prints and apparel. He’s been into art since he was a kid, but started taking it more seriously as he’s gotten older. Davis has participated in pop-up shops at arts venue La Cultura and Steelton shops Fashion Empire and Mean Girl Style.

His opening at L&L Beauty will also be the shop’s opening after being closed for renovations. L&L Beauty, which sells haircare products, will feature new vendors as well, including a barber and natural hairstylist.

Davis said that he may expand his business in the future, but is starting out small to get a feel for how the community responds. So far, it’s all been positive.

“People are glad to hear there’s a place closer,” he said.
