The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Actor/director Greg Sestero will visit Midtown Cinema later this month for a meet and greet and screening of “The Room.”

“Aftersun,” tells the story of a complex and heartbreaking relationship between a father and daughter. Watch the film this month at Midtown Cinema and read our review of the movie, here.

TheBurg Podcast for November features three Harrisburg-area women who have forged nontraditional or unprecedented career paths. And, as usual, our editor returns with his “Most Harrisburg Thing” for the month. Listen, here.

Gamut Theatre opened its 30th season last weekend with “Innocent Merriment; Or, an Evening with Gilbert & Sullivan,” our online story reported. Directed by opera singer Benjamin Krumreig, the show was the first major musical production by the theater.

Marie’s Kitchen recently opened in the Broad Street Market, offering flavorful Haitian cuisine, our reporting found. Chef Marie Anne Hartlaub is serving up comfort food that brings her back to her native country.

Midtown Cinema will host a special screening of the cult favorite “The Room,” with Greg Sestero, an actor in the movie. Fans can meet Sestero and also view the new film that he directed, “Miracle Valley,” our online story reported.

The Pride of the Susquehanna concluded its best season in years, taking in more than $200,000 in ticket sales, our online story reported. The riverboat is now docked on City Island for the season.

A proposed plan for a mixed-use building on the 400-block of Reily Street was revised as the developer decided to add more apartments to the project and eliminate hundreds of parking spaces, our reporting found. Philadelphia-area businessman Kevin Baird’s proposed seven-story building will now include 142 apartment units, a restaurant, a coffee shop, commercial space and a smaller parking garage.

Raising The Bar, a Harrisburg bakery, opened a second location on N. 3rd Street, in addition to their Broad Street Market stand. In our magazine story, read about the shop’s new standalone space and what the bakers are serving up.

Rock Steady Boxing uses non-contact boxing to help Parkinson’s patients fight back against the disease, our magazine story reported. The program, offered in Harrisburg and nationwide, has given people a place to find fellowship and hope.

Saw-whet owls used to be a mystery in the state, but thanks to the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art’s research project, researchers have learned a lot about the tiny owls. In our magazine story, read about the nightly volunteers who work to track the owls and their migratory patterns.

State Rep. Patty Kim, a Democrat, will serve another two-year term in office, as she defeated her Republican opponent on Election Day, our online story reported. The Harrisburg area also will have two new Democratic members of the state Assembly: Dave Madsen and Justin Fleming.

Harrisburg and Dauphin County officials announced Pete Baltimore (far right) as the new environmental enforcement officer for Harrisburg.

Focaccia bread is versatile and can be topped with fresh rosemary, black olives, tomatoes and mozzarella. Our food columnist Rosemary has the perfect recipe for you to try making on a fall afternoon.

Harrisburg City Council voted to recognize two former city activists by naming roadways after them, our reporting found. A portion of N. 6th Street will receive a secondary name as Rev. Billy Gray Way and a section of Harris Street as Judith C. Hill Way.

Harrisburg University announced two concerts for early 2023, our online story reported. Elle King will play at XL Live on Feb. 25 and indie band Dawes will return to Harrisburg on March 11 at XL Live.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Dauphin County Library System and local officials finish cutting the ribbon for the McCormick Riverfront Library expansion project.

It’s an eventful Friday in Harrisburg with 3rd in the Burg taking place at venues around the city. Get out and about in the crisp fall weather, but first, make sure you get up-to-date on this week’s local news.

Bob’s Art Blog highlights the beauty of autumn and features the artists who are inspired by it. Writer Bob discusses the “Water of Life” show at St. Stephen’s Riverfront Gallery, as well as other local happenings.

The Broad Street Market has a new executive director, Tanis Monroy, our reporting found. Monroy is a long-time Carlisle resident and has served as chair of the Amani Festival, a multicultural festival, in Carlisle.

“Call Jane” is a “fatefully relevant” film about an underground organization of women who help others get abortions, our movie reviewer said. The film plays in October at Midtown Cinema.

Daystar Center, a drug and alcohol treatment center in Harrisburg, has provided long-term residential treatment to about 130 men each year. In our magazine story, find out how the organization supports men through counseling, spiritual guidance and life skills training.

The Federal Building in Harrisburg will head back to auction next month, our reporting found. Last year, development company Global Ocean Investments purchased the building for $10 million and proposed turning it into luxury apartments.

N. 2nd Street in Harrisburg opened to two-way traffic this week.

Bike share is back in Harrisburg, as the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission unveiled the new program on Monday, our online story reported. People can now rent a pair of wheels at six locations across the city.

Free trees are available to the community as Harrisburg-based Pasa Sustainable Agriculture plans to distribute 10,000 next weekend, our online story reported. The giveaway is in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Ten Million Trees initiative, which aims to plant 10 million trees in the state by 2025.
