The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

UPMC and Community LifeTeam EMS professionals showed Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams how to administer chest compressions, during a press conference about their Minutes Matter initiative.

There’s a lot to celebrate this weekend in Harrisburg! Enjoy the Juneteenth festivities and happy Father’s Day to all of the Burg dads. Kick off the festive weekend tonight with 3rd in the Burg! Before you head out, catch up on all of our local news coverage below.

An apartment development project broke ground near the new federal courthouse in Harrisburg, our online story reported. Harrisburg-based developer Vice Capital, owned by LeSean McCoy, former NFL running back and Harrisburg native, plans to construct a 48-unit apartment building, called “Savoy 48.”

Author Floyd Stokes, executive director of the American Literacy Corp. in Harrisburg, hopes that his new book, “How We Found Our Pride: Letters to a Young Queer,” inspires young people to rise above adversity. In our magazine story, hear from some of the voices featured in the book.

Capital Area Cleanup has worked for about four years to beautify the greater Harrisburg area, as well as educate participants on how to better care for the earth. In our magazine story, read about the organizers’ goals for the cleanups.

Carlisle school board member, Rick Coplen, announced that he would run for the Democratic nomination in the 2024 primary for the 10th congressional district, our online story reported. Coplen’s announcement sets up a primary rematch with Harrisburg City Council member Shamaine Daniels who is also running for the seat again.

A Harrisburg area couple’s life as civil rights activists in the deep South more than 50 years ago connects to a current Susquehanna Art Museum exhibit, our magazine story reported. “Art and Activism at Tougaloo College” features pieces that the school has collected over the years, beginning when the couple, Barbara and Sterling Thompson, were students in 1963.

Harrisburg School District officials announced that the proposed 2023-24 budget now does not include a tax increase, our online story reported. They also weighed the possibility of demolishing the district’s long-vacant and blighted William Penn school.

Harrisburg University Presents added Trey Anastasio, co-founder of the band Phish, to its 2023 Summer Concert Series in Riverfront Park, our online story reported. HU Presents also announced that country musician Orville Peck, originally slated to play XL Live, is moving his concert to the riverfront.

Home sales fell, but prices held steady in May in the Harrisburg area, our reporting found. For the three-county region, 533 houses sold in May compared to 670 in May 2022, as the median sales prices rose slightly to $264,000 from $260,000.

Juneteenth HBG, an annual celebration spearheaded by Young Professionals of Color-Greater Harrisburg, has held events to commemorate Black history, art and culture. In our magazine story, find out what festivities are taking place this weekend.

Theatre Harrisburg’s show “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” is “hysterically funny,” says our reviewer. The show, which caps the theater’s 97th season, runs through June 25 at the Krevsky Center.

UPMC launched its Minutes Matter campaign in partnership with Harrisburg to provide emergency medical training to the public, our online story reported. UPMC will offer online and in-person education on how to intervene when someone’s experiencing cardiac arrest, uncontrolled bleeding, opioid overdose or a mental health crisis.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Owners of Creative Grounds, which is set to open in Mechanicsburg this weekend.

With Memorial Day behind us, summer is finally here to stay! The sun is out and Harrisburg is feeling the warmth. Find a spot on your porch, at the park or inside with the AC on and catch up on this week’s local news coverage, below.

TheBurg’s June issue of the magazine came out this week and features lots of summer stories. Make sure you grab a copy at one of our many distribution locations and let us know what you think!

Community Corner features an exciting list of June events to kick off the summer in Harrisburg. Our Happenings column has even more to enjoy, from theater to live music and educational events.

Creative Grounds is slated to open this weekend in Mechanicsburg, our online story reported. The creative space will open at the First National Bank building on W. Main Street with Denim Coffee opening on the first floor and an artist and maker space on the second floor.

Free Shakespeare in the Park returns for the summer, starting on Friday, our magazine story reported. This year, Gamut Theatre Group will perform “Richard III” at the bandshell in Reservoir Park in Harrisburg.

Harrisburg City Council decided to reconsider a proposed apartment development that it had previously rejected, our online story reported. On Tuesday approved a resolution that allows them to re-vote on the project, which aims to build a 21-unit apartment building on N. Front Street.

The Harrisburg Police Bureau pledged to address a series of shootings that have been taking place on the 1000-block of N. 3rd St., our reporting found. Most recently, four people were shot and sustained injuries on Sunday.

A homeless encampment near the Greenbelt trail in Harrisburg was recently given an eviction notice, our online story reported. As the date approached, occupants wondered where to go next. When eviction day came, those living in the encampment packed up and moved on, our reporting found.

June is here and that means this month’s magazine features all things summer fun, says our publisher. He reminds readers that there’s an awful lot to do in the area without needing to hit the highway.

“Poirot Investigates” lets viewers cast their worries aside for an evening of fun, says our theater reviewer. The silly show plays at Open Stage through June 17.

Artsfest returns to the riverfront in Harrisburg this weekend, our online story reported. The three-day festival will feature art vendors, food trucks and live music.

Bob’s Art Blog features local creators working in a variety of forms, including sculpture, woodworking and mixed media. Read his online column to see the unique range of art and hear from artists.

Civic Club of Harrisburg will host its second annual “Spring into Art” show on May 27, our online story reported. The show will take place in conjunction with Harrisburg’s Artsfest and will feature 20 local artists.

Harrisburg City Council voted down a proposed apartment development project, with several council members explaining their concern with the developer’s disinterest in creating affordable units, our reporting found. The project sought to demolish existing office buildings on the 2700-block of N Front St. and build a 21-unit apartment building.

Harrisburg ranked as the number-one place to live in Pennsylvania, according to U.S. News & World Report’s list of “Best Places to Live,” our online story reported. The report applauded Harrisburg for its affordability, strong arts scene, easy access to the “great outdoors” and proximity to larger cities.

Honey Bee’s Café and Bake Shoppe opened earlier this year in downtown Harrisburg, our magazine story reported. The breakfast and lunch spot offers classic café items with a unique twist.

Members 1st Federal Credit Union named its next president and CEO, Mike Wilson, our online story reported. Wilson, who previously served as the credit union’s chief experience officer, will take the reins from George Nahodil, who is retiring after 23 years with the company.
