Home sales and prices both fell this month in Harrisburg, our online story reported. For the three-county Harrisburg region, 448 previously owned homes sold last month, a drop from 628 houses in April 2022, as the median sales price fell to $245,000 from $250,500.

Melissa Mesones-Ortiz has dedicated countless hours to making the city more accessible to Spanish-speaking residents, our magazine story reported. Park Harrisburg, which operates Harrisburg’s parking meters, announced that motorists can now text to pay for parking, our online story reported. The company explained that it will offer the new option to make parking easier.

Veterans Multi-Service Center officials cut the ribbon on their new downtown Harrisburg facility.

It looks like Harrisburg will get a break from the rain this weekend, so make sure you get out and enjoy the sun. Before you head out for the weekend, catch up on our local news coverage, below.

Annual Arts Awards were announced by Theatre Harrisburg this month. In our magazine story, read about the winners, musical couple Ya-Ting Chang and Peter Sirotin and Sankofa African American Theatre Company.

The annual Harrisburg Ride of Silence will take place on May 17 to memorialize those who have been killed or injured while riding a bicycle, our online story reported. The 2.5-mile ride will end at the state Capitol for a ceremony to honor those killed on Pennsylvania’s roads in 2022. 

Harrisburg, county and federal officials announced a multi-million-dollar federal grant to help battle housing insecurity, our online story reported. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded local officials with a $2.3 million check for area social service groups to assist people who are experiencing homelessness.

HAAPI members at last year’s AAPI Heritage Month event, which will return to Harrisburg next month.

Can you believe it’s May already? The May issue of our magazine hit the stands this week, with a special spotlight on local dining. Grab a copy or read online, but while you’re here, catch up on this week’s local news coverage, below.

Autumn Fair, a Harrisburg native, recently launched a write-in bid for magisterial district judge for District 12-1-02, serving Midtown and Uptown. In our story, read about the challenges she has faced and about her desire to serve.

Community Corner shares some exciting events coming up this month in the Harrisburg area. Our Happenings column has even more ways to enjoy the month of May, with an extensive list of events.

Summer block parties to return to Harrisburg’s SoMa district, with food, drink, music

In a certain sign that summer is right around the corner, monthly block parties soon will return to Harrisburg’s SoMa neighborhood.

For a sixth year, S. 3rd Street, between Market and Chestnut streets, will shut down once a month for food, music and libations, according to organizers Sara Bozich and Harristown Enterprises.

The first party in the “South of Market” neighborhood will take place on Thursday, May 18, from 7 to 10 p.m. Additional block parties will follow on the last Thursday of the warm-weather months: June 29, July 27, Aug. 31 and Sept. 28.

All block parties begin at 7 p.m., are free to attend and are dog-friendly, according to Bozich.

Each block party will feature a variety of vendors, including craft breweries and wineries, food trucks, a live band, non-alcoholic beverage vendors, yard games and more.

This season’s musical lineup will feature Mark DeRose & the Dreadnoughts (May), Collinsville Discount Band (June), Nate Myers & the Aces (July), Funktion (August), and Little Brother Band (September).

In addition, businesses along the street will remain open late to accommodate shoppers. These include Stash Vintage x Midtown Dandy, Boneshire Taproom at SOMA, Tamara Boutique, El Sol, and sip @ soma.

Street parking is available on Market, Chestnut and 4th streets, among others in the area. Parking is free after 5 p.m. in most of downtown Harrisburg.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

It’s a beautiful night to experience 3rd in the Burg and explore all that the city has to offer. In our monthly magazine and online stories, you can also find lots of restaurants, galleries and theaters that you may have yet to check out. Artsfest will return to Harrisburg’s Riverfront Park next month, featuring dozens of artisans and craftspeople, our online story reported. From May 27 to 29, vendors, live music and food trucks will take over the park for the annual event. 

City Council member Rob Lawson shared his vision for affordable housing in Harrisburg in a community comment. He proposed the Harrisburg Buy Back Our Block Initiative to use city funds to acquire and rehab neglected housing.

El Coqui Bar & Grill recently opened in downtown Harrisburg, our magazine story reported. The restaurant serves Puerto Rican food and drinks, providing an authentic experience to locals.

The Great Harrisburg Litter Cleanup is set to take place across the city this weekend, our online story reported. The event will utilize volunteers to help beautify the Allison Hill, Uptown and Midtown neighborhoods.

Katie Trainer, a local artist, recently completed a 400-square-foot mural inside the PA Department of Labor & Industry building in Harrisburg, our magazine story reported. Trainer has completed 97 murals across the country and is also an author and all-around creative.

Mt. Joy, an indie-rock band, will perform in Harrisburg’s Riverfront Park on Sept. 16, as part of HU Presents’ Summer Concert Series. In our online story, find out what other local concerts were recently announced.

Harrisburg community members commented on the city’s proposed use of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds at a City Council town hall meeting.

Allison Hill may soon have a new park, as Harrisburg activist Char Magaro has plans to transform a vacant lot at S. 15th and Swatara streets into a green space, our story reported. Magaro will hold a public meeting for residents to share input on the proposal on Saturday at the site.

Art Blogger Bob takes a look at this year’s “Art in the Wild” outdoor installation at Wildwood Park and highlights the upcoming New Cumberland Earth and Arts Festival.

The federal courthouse on N. 6th Street in Harrisburg is slated to open to the public on Monday after decades of planning and years of construction, our online story reported. The building will serve as the new location of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.

Trucks may still be getting stuck under the N. Front Street railroad bridge in Harrisburg, but the number has significantly decreased over the past several months, our reporting found. City and PennDOT officials attribute the drop to signage added to the road last August.

Zeroday Brewing Co. announced that it has taken ownership of the restaurant inside its flagship taproom in Harrisburg, our online story reported. Veering from the restaurant’s former Mexican offerings, Zeroday serves salads, mac & cheese and sandwiches, among other American-style fare.
