Bob’s Art Blog: From Whimsy to a Wellspring in New Cumberland

One of the best things about the holidays is seeing old friends and getting to meet new ones. And on the off chance you haven’t yet heard, New Cumberland borough is a place to meet all sorts of creatives, from artists and crafters to hipster musicians, beat poets, theatrical ensembles and dancers alike. My esteemed colleague, Karen Hendricks, paved the way for this blog in her December Burg article on New Cumberland’s rebirth.

We braved the elements (Arctic temperatures and gale-force winds) on the Sunday before Thanksgiving for a Merry Merchants Holiday Market held by the New Cumberland Collective in the parking lot of Neato Burrito. Two dozen or so artists set up their shops for holiday sales.

Upon arrival, I ran into none other than the mural maestro, Stephen Michael Haas, standing before his masterpiece mural covering the entire wall of the Neato Burrito building. I was able to follow his exploits throughout his monumental year in art from his Instagram account. Finally getting to meet him on that most blustery afternoon proved to be auspicious for the merry makers I was to meet.

A hat ornament by Ellikin Knits. Ceramic squirrel by John Guarnera.

I was drawn to a booth of bounty, bold and bright colorful knitwear perfect for the winter weather that had just arrived. Stephanie Hawkins of Ellikin Knits was manning the stand as designer, knitter and all-around creator of her captivating couture collection. She was aided and abetted by her husband, Bradley, who is also a maker of “making things happen” as a user interface designer. Ellikin Knits’ range of products includes knit caps, ear wraps, mittens and scarves in an array of rainbow colors for any mood or moment.

Thinking about the close relationship I have with the squirrels in our yard, I wondered aloud if the shop had a winter cap suitable for one of my furry friends. I am an inveterate squirrel lover of many years, so I felt it was time to treat one to a warm topper. I ended up purchasing a hand-knit, tweed “Squirrel Nutkin” cap that any woodland critter would feel well turned out wearing. Stephanie assured me they were one-size-fits-all and can double as a sack for nut carrying. In actuality, they are sold as tree ornaments with details down to the smallest suede tab placed as an elegant trademark touch. In truth, the best-selling knit caps are made for adults and fashioned to a wearer’s fancy.

With yet another 10 weeks, at least, of winter weather ahead, you can find Ellikin’s wares at both Brain Vessel gallery locations in Mechanicsburg and Hershey and at [email protected] and ellikin.com.

Those knits full of whimsy form a joyous juxtaposition with the wellspring of faith-based, hand-crafted pottery and wood from Humble Hand.

Pottery by Brooke Jones

Listening to the story of potter Brooke Jones’ life journey may at first sound bittersweet, but it has led her to a transcendent peace. Receiving a diagnosis of dystonia as a teenager could have broken the spirit of the strongest, but it proved to be a blessing in disguise. Together with her husband, Rob, a woodworker of consummate skill, they created Humble Hand. Founded on the principle of kindness, they explore the relationship between wood and clay being wrought and molded by hand until finely tuned and tempered by love.

“Together, we find gratitude in the meaningful works that our hands create,” Brooke said.

For me, the beauty of a humble cup with a swath of delft blue running through it leads me to dreams to come and lands yet unchartered. Rob’s wooden cutting boards and charcuterie platters, as well as his trays, create an ambiance of artistry to beautify the table of any home. As artists and a couple, they complement each other on every level.

The Painted Word: An artist’s master work takes form in “River Spirit”

It is impossible to separate the man from the sculpture.

Fully immersed in an epic project for 22 years of his life, Professor Steven Dolbin has forged a totem of mammoth proportion, “River Spirit.”

The larger-than-life work stands like a modern-day Colossus standing watch over the property near the Cumberland/Franklin county line that he and his wife, Robin, call home. Imagination has been the key component at work for Dolbin as he is accustomed to creating outsized treasures from concrete, stainless steel and found objects. As the former head of the art department at Shippensburg University, Dolbin has forgone teaching summer classes for the past number of years to exclusively devote his time to the completion of “River Spirit.” After two decades, the sculpture has taken on a life of its own.

In creating “River Spirit,” Dolbin was driven onward by ancestry and ideology, providing a historical timeline with its indigenous iconography stemming from all corners of the world. Stepping back to the dawn of time, humans were but one tribe, scattered by the winds, coming to settle and survive in separate subgroups across the globe, continent by continent, region by region, creating distinct nationalities.

“River Spirit” embodies those journeys in size, shape and scope.

Weighing in at about 7,000 pounds, standing 12-feet tall, 37-feet long and 5-feet across, the sculpture’s sheer physical presence is awe-inspiring. Humbled by this magnitude, one realizes that mortal man is but a speck. “River Spirit” defies description as it is of the elements combining earth, wind, fire and water.

Dolbin continues to fine-tune his masterpiece as it moves towards its final home. His wife echoes that goal, having taken the journey with him in every way imaginable. It has been a team effort together on their archetypal quest.

“River Spirit,” originally financed by an art patron from Harrisburg nearly 30 years ago, was to find its way to the City Government Center, championed by then-Mayor Reed to become the gatekeeper of Riverfront Park. Today, Negley Park is an option, as is High Point, part of Native Land Heritage Park in York. As massive as it is, it would be a lasting treasure in the Pennsylvania State Museum for all to share in its beauty. Hand-hammered, forged and hewn by Dolbin, it is a personal vision and dream that needs to be seen by visitors far and wide.

“River Spirit” is a story of all nations and all peoples. The sculpture is part raven, part whale—a shadowing shape-shifter in its malleable form. And like its many parts, the whole is greater than anyone could imagine. Embedded in the stainless steel structure are sacred images of various cultures, tribal wisdom and tributes to original cave paintings.

“There’s no perfection as imperfection illustrates true beauty within and without,” Professor Dolbin shared.

One marvels at the underlying theme of life’s circuitous route. It tells the tale of evolution, permutation and transcendence, triumphant over the obstacles often associated with the journey taken over a lifetime.

In the end, no matter where “River Spirit” finds its home, the question that echoes down through eternity is—what I have made, will it endure? Professor Dolbin can rest assured as “River Spirit” exists outside of time, forever in the firmament amidst great works of art.

Throw Your Cares Away: Local artist Robin Wheeler shares her joy of pottery

Robin Wheeler

In the summer of 2012, Robin Wheeler returned to school as an adult, attending HACC to complete her associate’s degree in small business management.

In her schedule, she included a ceramics class, something she had never tried, but decided to toss in, just for fun. Quickly, the elective course became a passion.

Wheeler took every pottery class offered at HACC until she graduated in 2018. In some of her classes, she displayed her work and gave pottery wheel demonstrations at craft shows. Sometimes, people approached her and asked her to teach them the art.

“That started the thought process of not just being a potter and making my wares, but teaching other people how to use the pottery wheel and the other things I had been learning,” Wheeler said.

After finishing at HACC and, with the rise of COVID-19 in 2020, Wheeler searched for a reason to keep making pottery. That’s when the opportunity arose to start her own business.

Wheeler opened her studio, Wheel of Light, in Halifax in October 2021. The building has rooms that offer a variety of classes for adults and children, like painting, wood burning, jewelry making, weaving, masonry and more. There is a designated studio with wheels and kilns for pottery classes. Additionally, a gallery spotlights the work of different local artists each month, and a consignment shop features the work of 30 different artists.

Wheeler teaches many of the classes within her expertise, with help from some of her former HACC classmates who teach other courses. Many Wheel of Light teachers, vendors and class members have come to the studio through word of mouth and meeting at craft shows.

Wheeler said that opening the studio as a place for people to freely make art was important to her, as she’s seen spaces like these “shrivel up” as some schools get rid of their art programs.

“If the school is not going to offer it, someone has to,” Wheeler said. “And that’s where I come in.”

Wheel of Light’s location in Halifax was carefully chosen.

“Sometimes, I think I should’ve put it near Harrisburg because there are more people there,” Wheeler said. “But I really felt like I needed to open it here. When we opened, I had community members thank me for opening it here. I had one woman look at me and say, ‘We deserve nice things.’”

Beth Hogan and Tammy Rumbaugh, two of Wheeler’s pottery students, have enjoyed their time at Wheel of Light.

“Robin is very patient. She knows what she’s doing, and her demonstrations are very good,” Hogan said. “She’s always very positive and creates a good space.”

Rumbaugh always wanted to learn to make pottery and finally had the chance to do so this year. As a counselor, she finds many similarities between the art of pottery and what she tells her clients.

“You have to be very, very mindful,” Rumbaugh said. “It is definitely a soul journey.”

Besides the classes, Wheel of Light offers studio memberships to anyone who wants to perfect their skills on their own time. Each member gets a locker and unlimited access to all equipment in the studio.

As for Wheeler’s goals, she hopes her students learn not only about the art, but about themselves.

“I hope they find their creativity. I hope they grow their creativity,” Wheeler said. “I hope they find some freedom or some comfort in the process of making whatever it is they make.”

Wheel of Light is located at 3738 Peters Mountain Rd., Halifax. They will hold an open house on Oct. 22, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. More information and a class schedule can be found at www.shop.wheeloflightstudio.com or on their Facebook page.

September Editor’s Note

Our arts writer, Bob MacGinnes, once remarked that everyone in Harrisburg seemed to be an artist.

I don’t believe he meant this literally, and the circle of creators he regularly hangs with may have swayed his judgment.

Still, I understand where he was coming from. In recent years, Harrisburg seems to have gone from art-starved to art-stocked. Dedicated galleries still have a tough time here, but art seems to be everywhere else—from Allison Hill to Midtown to the waterfront.

This month, Harrisburg residents and visitors will have ample opportunity to see for themselves what old Bob was talking about.

First, Kipona returns over the Labor Day weekend, featuring, among other elements, an artist market. A week later, it’s again time to lace up those sneakers for Gallery Walk, which is back for its 34th year.

Here at TheBurg, we like to think we play a small role in the month’s burst of color. Each September, we have a special art focus or, as I’m apt to say, even more art than usual.

In our section, you’ll discover a wide variety of artistic endeavors and the folks doing them—painting, pottery, writing, theater and music all take a bow. Of course, we still have our usual “Culture” section where you’ll find, yes, more art!

Beyond the local art world, the wonderful, warm month of September promises more great fun. Since June, I’ve attended each SoMa block party and have been impressed by the crowds, the music, the food and, most importantly, the sense of community. The next one is slated for Sept. 29 at S. 3rd and Market streets—I highly recommend attending.

Speaking of both community and parties, our Friends of TheBurg bash takes place on Sept. 8 at the historic King Mansion. We at TheBurg hope to see all of our dedicated “Friends” and fans there.

Happy September, everyone—in Harrisburg, surely one of the best months of the year.

The Painted Word: For this year’s Gallery Walk, Hollywood comes to Harrisburg

Artwork by Ted Walke, Gallery@Second

Carrie Wissler-Thomas, CEO of the Art Association of Harrisburg, is rolling out the red carpet. The 34th annual Gallery Walk, held this year on Sept. 11, is a tribute to “The Silver Screen.”

Imagine the streets of Harrisburg like the legendary Sunset and Vine, alongside Hollywood Boulevard. Harrisburg’s art corridors create cinematic verité’ in 19 varied venues throughout the city, tent-poled by the AAH’s homage to stars of yesteryear.

There is something for everyone’s taste with “theaters” both inside and out. Much like at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, cavernous grand lobbies will greet visitors at venues like the Pennsylvania State Museum, leading to “Art of the State” in its 55th edition, and the Susquehanna Art Museum, which showcases “Making Your Mark: Prints and Drawings.”

For history buffs, choices abound. Old City Hall apartments will house works by regional high schools as part of the “Artistic Expressions” group. Capital Area School for the Arts (CASA) in Strawberry Square unveils its student fall show, “Connection,” which includes an awards ceremony. Think the “Oscars” for young artists.

The McCormick Riverfront Library has undergone a dramatic transformation, as has the now-connected Haldeman-Haly House. Both buildings are works of art themselves. Beyond the stacked library shelves, local artists, including Amy Powell, Todd Seltzer, E. Patrick Brown and Christina Juarez, will display their works.

Historic Harrisburg Resource Center will exhibit “Harrisburg’s Hidden African-American Heritage,” which explores the neighborhoods of the old 8th Ward. The fascinating foray is told through verbal recollections, vintage photos and more. Included are the Underground Railroad and the Bethel Trail.

Historic homes also will have their doors open. The Historical Society of Dauphin County will greet visitors at John Harris-Simon Cameron Mansion, as will the Civic Club of Harrisburg at its Overlook Mansion, nestled within Riverfront Park. Come and meet new President Contrena Baltimore, who is overseeing the Overlook.

Religious houses are “G” rated for all ages and beliefs, with open doors for tours, exhibits and more at four participants: Riverfront Gallery at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Zion Lutheran Church, Salem United Church of Christ and St. Michael’s Lutheran Church. While at the latter, look for the photography of Joel Anderson, who specializes in classic film and darkroom techniques.

Five independent galleries will participate, offering unique art adventures from downtown to Midtown.

First up, Gallery@Second, owned and operated by Ted and Linda Walke, will provide a glimpse of contemporary lowbrow and pop surrealist artwork by local artists.

Arriving at 3rd and Verbeke, you’ll be able to visit numerous galleries, all within a stone’s throw.

The Millworks will unveil its new show featuring artists Rebecca Adey, Tara Chickey, Elaine Elledge, Paul Gallo and Julie Iaria. Vivi on Verbeke is a throwback to the best of the late ‘60s-peace, love and pottery, in addition to the stellar photography of Vivian Sterste’s partner, Jackson (Jeb) Boyd. The couple adds ambiance and hospitality every time you enter their gallery-like home.

Midtown Scholar Bookstore/Robinson’s Gallery provides the bridge between education and art. There, local photographer Eric Mizak will be featured, along with prints from the collection of Robinson’s Fine Prints.

Last year, Nyeusi Gallery opened its doors for the first time on Gallery Walk Sunday, bringing African and African American art to the foreground in Harrisburg. Featuring both Pennsylvania artists and an international roster, owners Dr. Dale Dangleben and Michelle Green have made Nyeusi Gallery a destination for many types of artistic endeavors.

Prominently positioned for great viewing is the ever-expanding “drive-in theater” experience, the Sprocket Mural Works tour of building-sized art. “Mural Mile” tours will depart from the state Capitol steps at 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m., with a suggested donation of $15.

That wraps up the preview for Gallery Walk’s edition of the Silver Screen. Who knows, maybe someday in the future Harrisburg will have its own Walk of Fame. Artists, community paint mural on Harrisburg restaurant’s boarded-up window after gunfire damage

Artist Vivian Sterste (in background) and community members paint a canvas to cover Pastorante’s boarded-up window.

The community is getting creative to help a Harrisburg restaurant look a bit brighter.

On Thursday, local artists and community members gathered at Pastorante, a restaurant in Midtown, to hang and paint a canvas on the front of the building. The artwork covers a boarded-up window that was shattered during gunfire last week.

“It’s great,” said owner Sri Kumarasingam of the mural. “The community always comes through.”

Early in the morning on Aug. 12, the restaurant’s window on the 1000-block of N. 3rd St. was hit during a shooting incident. Pastorante was closed at the time, and no one was injured.

However, Kumarasingam now must replace his window, which will likely take two to three weeks, he said. He does not know yet what his insurance will cover. In the meantime, he launched a GoFundMe page to raise money. By Thursday afternoon, the page had raised nearly $5,000.

Harrisburg Artist Vivian Sterste, owner of Midtown gallery Vivi on Verbeke, decided to help in the best way she knew how—through art. On Thursday, Sterste organized a community mural project to cover the boarded-up window.

According to Kumarasingam, business was slow over the weekend, which he believes was due to the building’s appearance. The mural, which is in progress, will help with that, he said.

“This will definitely help business,” he said. “It will be a talking point, and it will look pretty outside.”

Sterste said that over a dozen people stopped by to leave their mark on the mural by Thursday afternoon. She expects to continue painting for the next day or two, or whenever the mural is complete. The inspiration for the painting came from Kumarasingam’s request for an image of a field of flowers.

“This is an effort to support the community and get people involved,” Sterste said. “It’ll be colorful and hopefully encourage business and bring some joy.”

Midtown resident Tonya Andrews dined at Pastorante before and loved their black squid ink pasta. On Thursday, she came to help paint after seeing Sterste’s post about the project on Facebook.

“I have the time and I want to help,” she said. “It’s always good to help out. And I like this restaurant.”

Pastorante is located at 1012 N. 3rd St., Harrisburg. For more information, visit their website or Facebook page.

Bob’s Art Blog: Makers and Shakers of Sustainability

Work by Phillip Wells

A shared appreciation for sustainability connects two unique artists, Phillip Wells and Jennifer Hara, who embrace saving the earth one project at a time.

The “shaker,” Phil Wells of Millworks Studio 213, is like lightning, constantly on the move creating and designing furniture and light fixtures and employing his skills as a carpenter for the preservation firm, Johnson & Griffiths. Certainly one of the most interesting characters walking the streets of Midtown, Phil is truly a modern-day renaissance man. His prowess as a carpenter and lighting specialist is legendary. He appreciates the educational foundation he received from the Memphis School of Design. Memphis as in Milan, Italy, not Tennessee, as one might think.

The brightly colored components found in Phil’s aesthetic sprang up in the 1980s, the brainchild of Ettore Sottsass, who designed postmodern furniture. For Phil, the appeal goes beyond the terrazzo materials and plastic laminate often associated with the abstract decoration. Phil’s inspiration can be childlike, filled with joy and whimsy.

In addition, Phil is a sustainability proponent and certified as a LEED Green associate, which is helpful in his role as a preservationist technician. With over 12 years of hands-on study and experience, Wells brings a wealth of craftsmanship to the table. Focusing on sustainability, Phil shared that he employs non-toxic finishes, natural dyes, beeswax, hand-rubbed oils and local PA materials. He prides himself “in creating household wares that speak to modern sensibilities.” His work can be viewed in homes and businesses throughout the midstate area. His restoration work with Johnson & Griffiths can be seen at the state Capitol and Forum buildings. Look for Phil in his Millworks studio and out and about on the streets of Midtown.

For 25 years, local artist Jennifer Hara has been a “maker” of naturally organic jewelry under the name NomadicInspiration. She is drawn to the lifestyle of a tribe, always on the move. Sustainability is key to the philosophy that nomads embrace in their daily walk as they “use what is around them in nature, sustainably, without producing waste,” Hara said.

“This reflects not only in my use of natural items, bone, shells, feathers, stones, but in repurposing outdated jewelry—breaking it down and using its components in new pieces,” the artist revealed.

Display and jewelry by Jennifer Hara

Her artistic accouterments include earrings, necklaces and suncatchers. The feathers she incorporates in her offerings are all “gifted” and, if a customer wants to commission a special piece, she could incorporate a feather of their own. The exquisite adornments speak for themselves and are created unparalleled, with no two exactly alike.

At the most recent Odd Ones Bizarre, held in the community room at Millworks, Ms. Hara showcased her jewelry on a unique display of connecting tree branches and limbs with moss and lichen. Found hanging from this miniature forest were the earrings, suncatchers and necklaces that sparkled and shined, baubles to catch the eye of passersby. Not one to resist such an artistic atmosphere, I immediately saw “the forest for the trees” as the jewelry emerged, capturing the imagination.

Jennifer, the jeweler/artist and display aficionado all rolled into one, presented a powerful package. The jewelry, as mentioned before, lends itself to the natural surroundings, treasures dangling dramatically, delicately and desirably. Her art speaks to exotic locales as her Etsy shop is aptly titled NomadicInspiration. Her skills as a creative crafter and cobbler of gems for adventurous and free-spirited vagabonds embody the romantic side of life. Her collection captures it all.

Select items can be found at the Healing Spot above the Cornerstone Café in Camp Hill. In addition, Jennifer will be at the “Women of Folk Festival” at Moon Dancer Winery in Wrightsville on Sept. 10. She can also be reached by email at [email protected].

3rd in the Burg—Birds of a Feather

Sustainability has always been a core component in the art of Harrisburg artist Charlie Feathers. Recycling found objects from discarded wire and tubing, he creates treasures from others’ trash and cast-off items. At least for the summer, Charlie has joined the flock of artists at Harrisburg’s Gallery at 2nd, adding newness to Ted Walke’s nest of nascent nonconformists creating lowbrow, surrealistic art. The art aviary features in-house residents Sean Adomanis, Chad Whitaker, Rance Shepstone, Ashley Russo, Keegan Beinhower and, of course, Ted.

Charlie shared that, for Friday’s 3rd in the Burg, he will be in two places at once, flying from Gallery at 2nd to the Art Association of Harrisburg’s opening night reception for its summer members’ art exhibit from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Surprise jurors from the Burg will add an element of mystery to the evening’s events. And the best part…it is free for all.
