Pride on Screen: LGBTQ+ film festival will celebrates Pride Month

Harrisburg’s LGBTQ+ Film Showcase

Stories of pride will hit the big screen in the coming weeks.

The LGBT Center of Central PA and Midtown Cinema are collaborating on Reel Pride, a new recurring film series recognizing LGBTQ+ narratives and filmmakers that will earn funding to support the center’s services and programming.

“Film is an empathy machine,” said Wallace McKelvey, a filmmaker and past LGBT Center board chair who helped arrange the screenings. “As the great film critic Roger Ebert observed, movies allow us to spend a few hours in the shoes of the characters on screen. Reel Pride brings together people from many different backgrounds, showcases local artists, and helps sustain the LGBT Center’s essential work in our community.”

A few film screenings will be offered with Q&As afterwards, including Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” on June 26 at 7 p.m. and the Local Queer Film Showcase on July 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Amber Barnes, the LGBT Center’s executive director, said the center’s work is only possible through community support, a reality emphasized by recent funding cuts. The center offers a variety of cultural, educational, housing, and other support services for LGBTQ+ individuals within the community.

“We are grateful to Midtown Cinema and everyone involved in bringing Reel Pride to life,” Barnes said. “This series not only helps sustain our programming but also creates meaningful opportunities to celebrate LGBTQ+ stories and people.”

Tickets are available at the box office located at 250 Reily St. in Harrisburg or on the Midtown Cinema website.
