The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, along with local and state officials, announced significant federal funding for the I-83 South Bridge replacement.

Friday night brings a special 3rd in the Burg event at the Broad Street Market, with kids activities, music and food. Some of TheBurg staff will be there to say “hello” and hand you a copy of our July magazine, if you haven’t gotten one yet. Before you head out, catch up on our news reporting from this week, below.

Bob’s Art Blog heads to HIVE Artspace to showcase an exhibit focused on feathered friends. Click here to read. In part two of his blog, also released this week, he highlights even more bird art.

TheBurg was named “2024 News Organization of the Year,” a statewide honor presented by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association Foundation, our online story reported. This is the fourth straight year that TheBurg has won this honor.

The Broad Street Market announced that its temporary structure has a name: “Tenty McTentface,” our online story reported. The name was chosen from community submissions and a voting process.

Cupboard Maker Books combines their love for books with their love for cats. The shop has three cats that live full-time and roam freely inside the Enola shop, often appearing on the shop’s very active social media pages. Click here to read our story.

Dauphin County reopened its Emergency Rental and Utility Assistance Program (ERAP) to those struggling with housing expenses due to the pandemic, our online story reported. The program, which was introduced during COVID, uses federal and state funding.

GLO Harrisburg will cut the ribbon on its new location inside Strawberry Square next week, our online story reported. GLO functions under the umbrella of the LGBT Center of Central PA, specifically servicing LGBTQ+-identifying men and trans women of color.

The Harrisburg Fringe Fest takes place July 18 to 21, promoting local and national artists, our online story reported. This year’s performances cover everything from sci-fi stage plays to brass bands to crochet improv.

Harrisburg officials said that the city would give $1 million of its federal COVID-relief funds to Downtown Daily Bread and Christian Churches United of the Tri County Area to begin offering year-round overnight shelters, our online story reported.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Hamilton Health Center and local officials cut the ribbon on the new Steelton facility this week.

The July heat has been hitting Harrisburg hard, so we hope you’ve been able to find ways to cool off. If you’re heading to the pool or beach this month, make sure to take TheBurg along for a great beach read! While you’re here, catch up on our local news coverage from the week, below.

The Broad Street Market fire was one year ago this month. In his column, our publisher shares some reflections on what has happened in the months since the tragedy.

In a Community Comment, Broad Street Market Board Chair Eric Hagarty discusses the challenges of the past year following the market fire, but also the ways the community has supported the market. 

Fourth of July fireworks were cut short in Harrisburg after police apprehended multiple people with guns in the crowd, our online story reported. City officials addressed the incident at a Monday morning press conference.

Hamilton Health Center cut the ribbon on its new Steelton location this week, our online story reported. The health center will officially open to patients on Monday, July 15, offering a full spectrum of family care to men, women and children.

Harrisburg City Council denied a proposed demo for 1511 N. Front Street, our reporting found. Council expressed concerns about taking down a building in the city’s historic district and replacing it with parking.

Home sales were generally lower in June, but prices were up, our online story reported. For the three-county region, 593 homes sold compared to 659 in June 2023, as the median sales price rose to $290,000 from $273,000.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg announced Zach Benjamin as its new president and CEO, our online story reported. Benjamin will officially assume the position in mid-August.

Pride Festival of Central PA returns to Harrisburg on July 27, our magazine story reported. This year, the festival will bring back its Pride Parade after years off.

The Residences at Governor’s Square in Harrisburg has several bidders and interested parties for the apartment complex, but none have yet received required federal approvals, our online story reported. The owner, Uptown Partners, has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, searing for a buyer for months.

“River City Stories,” a film by Harrisburg residents Paul Hood and Wallace McKelvey, highlights the city’s diversity, our online story reported. The movie will premiere at Midtown Cinema on July 19 and 20 as a part of the Harrisburg Fringe Festival.

Road repaving began this week in Harrisburg, our reporting found. Over 25 stretches of road in many of Harrisburg’s neighborhoods will receive new pavement this summer and fall.

Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams swore in four new police officers at a ceremony.

The Broad Street Market’s temporary tent will receive a name selected by the community, our online story reported. People can visit the tent to vote on their favorite of five names submitted by community members.

Ngozi’s Let’s Get Dirty!, the Bridge and Harrisburg Area Camp Curtin YMCA are partnering with Harrisburg-based Precision Recyclers to create two sites for the free disposal of end-of-life electronics, our online story reported. On certain dates from July through October, people can drop off their e-waste at two locations. 

Premier Arts and Science Charter School in Allison Hill announced that it will not reopen for the 2024-25 school year, our online story reported. The school opted to not oppose charter non-renewal proceedings issued by the Harrisburg School District. 

The Foundation for Enhancing Communities announced Jennifer Doyle as its new CEO and president, our online story reported. Doyle has worked for the organization in several roles over the past 15 years.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Fleet Foxes performed last weekend as part of Harrisburg University Presents’ Summer Concert Series in Riverfront Park.

Fleet Foxes performed in Riverfront Park last weekend as part of HU Presents’ summer music series. Our reviewer shares her thoughts on the concert, here.

Harrisburg School District passed its 2024-25 budget of $211.7 million this week, our online story reported. The budget does not include a property tax increase for city residents.

Harristown Enterprises announced that it would renovate 104 and 106 Walnut St., which have long been vacant, and transform them into four new apartments, our online story reported. The new units, called Charming on Walnut, will each include two bedrooms and two baths.

July Fourth festivities will take place in Harrisburg next week, featuring food trucks, music and fireworks, our online story reported. The city will also kick off its free July Music Series next week, with events throughout the month at Reservoir Park.

Lt. Gov. Austin Davis hosted a roundtable conversation to discuss gun violence, with local officials and community members commenting on the initiatives they’re taking to find solutions. Click here to read about the statewide and local grants and projects to address the issue.

Mt. Gretna’s Outdoor Art Show is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with special programming throughout the summer, our magazine story reported. The outdoor art show itself will take place in August.

The Ned Smith Center has a full slate of summer concerts lined up with special activities to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its DeSoto Amphitheater, our online story reported.

A park planned for a vacant, blighted lot in Allison Hill has garnered support from neighbors, along with some concern from city officials, our magazine story reported. Community members have joined with the city and nearby nonprofits to create the park, which will include native plants and rain gardens.

PennDOT announced that the 29th Street bridge, spanning I-83, will close from the evening of July 8 through Nov. 12, 2025, as work is done to replace it. Read our online story to find detour information.
