“It’s Good to be Back”: Open Stage’s OSHKids returns with “Jack and the Giant”

In the late 1980s, my parents entered me into an after school theater program at the community center in our small town. Perhaps they thought I would expend my seemingly endless amount of 6-year-old energy in that 60-minute class.

I don’t remember much about the play, an original piece wherein I portrayed an overzealous alien in a rubber mask who got to shout three lines (which I meticulously highlighted and practiced over and over again). A few years later and a thousand miles away, the students of The Alsedek Theatre School at Open Stage are preparing to open the first in-person OSHKids production in two years.

The school started as a Meisner-based program in the late 1980s for adults in the Harrisburg area (around the same time a 6-year-old in Oklahoma was bellowing some lines in a cafetorium), and developed several classes for school-aged students by the early 2000s, one of which being the OSHKids Performance Company (“OSH” being Open Stage of Harrisburg). For almost 20 years, the program thrived with classes involving performance-based learning and creative dramatics, with lessons packed with gameplay, improvisation, movement, voice and character building. At the end of the eight-month-long class, the students performed a play.

Like everything else in the world, that halted in March of 2020.

Two years after the beginning of what the staff sardonically calls, “The Great Intermission,” the kids of The Alsedek Theatre School are preparing to open “Jack and the Giant,” a musical based on the English fairy tale more commonly named “Jack and the Beanstalk.”

The story is over 500 years old but goes something like this: there’s an optimistic (albeit naive) lad—always named “Jack”—who trades his last item of value, his cow, for a handful of beans. The beans, he is promised (by either a soothsayer, mysterious traveler, or even an actual con artist, depending on which version of the folktale you hear) are magic and will bring him great fame and fortune.

“Jack and the Giant” is a fast-paced, charming and colorful version of the story and throws in a singing troll, a dancing cow and something called “Wiggle Waggle.” Some of the students, who range in age from 6 to 13, will be performing in their very first play, while others are returning to the OSHKids program and are eager to get back on stage.

One of the returning students is Sawyer Bowie, who plays the titular Jack, the renowned slayer of giants. Sawyer began with the OSHKids program in 2019, and made his stage debut in the 20th anniversary production of “A Christmas Carol” the same year. Sawyer, who is 11 years old, is excited to bring Jack’s adventure to life. When asked what he loved most about his experiences on stage, he answered thoughtfully: “Expressing myself onstage and letting my personality shine through different characters.”

Sawyer’s mother, Heidi, appreciates the life lessons that the classes give him.

“It gives him a sense of community, especially coming out of COVID,” she said. “He loves it so much, and I feel like him having the ability to play different characters is helping him in life. Helping him to learn to adapt, helping him to learn to be the person that he wants to really be, because he’s able to put himself in someone else’s shoes. So, for me, that means everything. And it’s what lights him up.”

The return of the OSHKids Performance Company marks a huge moment emerging from “The Great Intermission,” and the theater is readying an entire year of youth programming, such as summer classes that include “Frozen KIDS” and Musical Theatre Workshop, as well as a return to OSHKids in the fall with a literary-focused class culminating in a production of “Charlotte’s Web.”

There’s a palpable excitement from the cast of this year’s Performance Company as they work on dance numbers, learn the music, talk about safety when doing fight choreography, and go through the myriad of details that bring a massively challenging show like “Jack and the Giant” together. It’s challenging, of course, but like any theater kid will tell you, they do it because it’s fun.

Sawyer says it best: “It’s good to be back.”

“Jack and the Giant” runs April 7 to 10 at Open Stage, 25 N. Court St., Harrisburg. For more information, and tickets, visit

Love and Identity: “Profoundly fluid, poetic” story opens this month at Gamut Theatre

Gamut Theatre’s mission is to tell classic stories in new and exciting ways.

In this effort, they have managed to marry the ideas of “classic” and “contemporary” into one union, taking concepts that should be at odds with each other and letting them flourish together.

Such is the case with their spring showcase production, “Orlando.” Despite being written in 1928, this story is as relevant as ever for those who seek to truly know themselves. In a conversation with the director, Francesca Amendolia, I was able to learn more about the play.

“‘Orlando’ is a profoundly fluid, poetic piece of theater, one that makes unusual demands of the cast and crew and one that asks the audience to embrace that fluidity, to follow Orlando’s story with gentle curiosity and without judgment,” Amendolia explained.

Orlando, a young nobleman in the court of Queen Elizabeth I, yearns for love and adventure and to find his place in the world. So strong is his longing that he becomes untethered in time. Two hundred years of adventures and loves later, Orlando (who is now only 30) awakes from a weeklong sleep to discover she has become a woman. Transformed and yet essentially the same person, Orlando still hungers for adventure and love and understanding. So, has anything really changed?

“As a culture, we’re currently immersed in a long and complicated conversation about gender and gender expression,” Amendolia said. “Because so many young people are at the forefront, it can seem like a very modern conversation, but it isn’t. ‘Orlando’ was written almost a hundred years ago and, when Virginia Woolf titled it a ‘biography,’ she wasn’t entirely joking. The novel’s inspiration, Vita Sackville-West, was not only bisexual but also what we might today call gender fluid—she had a male persona named Julian. ‘Orlando’ reminds us that there’s nothing new about humans trying to figure out who they are.”

And in this vein, Orlando’s experience with loneliness and isolation throughout an extended timeline is very poignant to people right now. As we emerge from a pandemic that has been life-changing for so many, this story about finding your way to an earnest bond with others, while maintaining your own identity, is more relevant than ever.

So, what is “Orlando” really about?

“Orlando” is about finding yourself. “Orlando” is about gender. “Orlando” is about how deeply Virginia Woolf loved Vita Sackville-West. “Orlando” is about loneliness. “Orlando” is about love and loss. “Orlando” is about innocence and maturity. “Orlando” is about creativity and poetry. “Orlando” is about time. “Orlando” is a trans story. “Orlando” is a history, a biography, a fantasy.

“Here’s the real answer—the more we try to categorize ‘Orlando,’ the more we lose the point,” Amendolia said. “Woolf herself didn’t confine ‘Orlando’ to a single genre, instead interweaving fiction and biography, fantasy and history. There’s no single label that we can affix to ‘Orlando.’ There’s no box that ‘Orlando’ can’t kick to pieces.”

Maybe that’s the greatest takeaway for audiences. You can be who you are without trying to fit inside a designated box.

Audiences can expect to feel celebrated and entertained and, hopefully, more connected to each other. The intention of the play is to convey how important every human being is, regardless of how they define themselves.

Amendolia believes that there will be a wonderful aftertaste for those who come out to see this show.

“‘Orlando’ offers a glimpse of something beautiful—a world where people are entirely free to figure out who they are without judgment or restriction or fear, a world in which people can find their voices and then raise them to say true things,” Amendolia said. “For two hours, all of us will be in that world together, and I think that has the power to change us all for the better.”

“Orlando” runs March 12 to 27 at Gamut Theatre, 15 N. 4th St., Harrisburg. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.gamuttheatre.org or call 717-238-4111.

Who Wants to See a Holiday Show? Five reasons to see “A Christmas Carol” at Open Stage

Oh hi! Hello! And “how do you do?”

It’s your favorite dame here—Miss Cindy Lou-Who!

I’m back on stage down on old North Court Street

In a holiday play that sure is a treat!

You can check me out soon in an adults-only show

But for family fun, there’s another show you should go….to.

Okay, there are a lot of reasons for me to hate Christmas (let’s just say one of the top reasons is green, hairy and rhymes with “The Finch”), and I can tell you all about it in my one-Who tour-de-force “Who’s Holiday!,” starting Nov. 26.

But bein’ around the cast and creative team behind “A Christmas Carol” has reminded me why this play and the people who put it on are so special. So, buckle up, buttercups—here’s Cindy Lou Who’s list of “The Top Five Reasons You Should See ‘A Christmas Carol’ This Year.” (For other listicles, including “Five Ways to Use Leftover Roast Beast,” “Fahoo Fores, Dahoo Dores and Seven Other Non-Secular Christmas Favorites” and “Thirteen Home Hacks With Your Zizzer-zazzer-zuzz,” you can check out my YouTube channel.)

It’s a ghost story

There’s a long tradition of telling ghost stories around Christmas that go way, way back before “Christmas” as we know it, and, of course, Chuck Dickens wrote the world’s most famous ghost story of Christmas in his 1860 bestseller “A Christmas Carol.” Boy howdy, this show is chock-full of spirits, apparitions and your run-of-the-mill scares. David Richwine returns for his fifth year playing Jacob Marley, and, seeing the looks on folks’ faces when Marley appears on stage for the first time—it takes my breath away. It’s terrifying, exhilarating and just plain fun! Everything a good ghost story should be.

There’s magic! Literal magic!

I’m not going to spoil too much, but there are some jaw-dropping special effects in this show. Every year, the staff members get asked, “How did they do that?” I would tell you, but honestly I have no idea…magnets?

Nicholas Hughes as Ebenezer Scrooge

Nick has been playing Scrooge since the early aughts, and the thoughtfulness and passion that he brings to this character is inspiring. “A Christmas Carol” proves that even the most miserable can find light in the world and help spread that light and love to his fellow humans (we in “The Biz” call it, a “redemption arc”). Mr. Hughes plays the part with grace, and performs to each audience as if it were the first time.

Okay, but like, the WHOLE CAST

Most of the folks who are joining us this year are returning to the show after a two-year hiatus (did you hear about theaters being shut down? It was a whole thing). To see people like Karen Ruch return as The Ghost of Christmas Past (all swishing skirts and gold glitter) or Patrick Hughes as Scrooge’s nephew Fred (a wealth of heartfelt speeches and the epitome of Christmas cheer) or Jonathan Hoover (who started six years ago as our Tiny Tim and is now taller than most of us)—to see them share the stage with some of our newcomers, who get to experience this magic for the first time—well, it warms my Who-heart.

We need a little Christmas

There is so much that I can’t fit into this list—the atmospheric lighting and sound effects, the beautifully painted stage, the lush costumes, the intimidating amount of fog, but when it comes right down to it, this is a show that will make you feel good. Let’s face it—it’s been a rough couple of years. We deserve all the joy, laughter, awe and wonder that this piece of theater brings every night.

I’m looking forward to welcoming you all back to Cindy Lou’s trailer this year (well, all of you adult yous) or seeing you in the audience at “A Christmas Carol.”

“Who’s Holiday!” runs Nov. 26 to Dec. 22. “A Christmas Carol” runs Dec. 4 to 23. Tickets and information can be found at www.openstagehbg.com.

Prominent race educator Jane Elliott to speak at Sankofa film festival

Sankofa African American Theatre Company is ready to discuss how to move forward as a country, and they’ve landed a big name to help.

For their annual Reel2Real Film Festival, being held virtually this year, the Harrisburg theater company booked renowned race educator Jane Elliott as a speaker.

“We are so excited about bringing Jane [virtually] to this area and audience,” Executive Artistic Director Sharia Benn said.

Elliott is known for her “Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes” exercise that she first conducted with her third-grade students in 1968. The exercise was intended to teach children about racism and bias by telling them one group of students was superior based on eye color.

Since then, Elliott has remained a prominent speaker and diversity trainer.

On Monday, Sankofa will screen “A Class Divided,” a PBS documentary that showcases Elliott’s exercise and follows up with her former students as adults.

After the documentary, Benn, Johntrae Williams, a Sankofa board member, and Otto Banks, a former city council member, will join Elliott for a panel discussion.

“It felt like Jane would add so much value and also help reach a target audience,” Benn said. “We are hoping we will get a good attendance for this.”

Benn said that she hopes the festival with reach a diverse audience and teach people not only how biases are created, but how they can be changed.

The film festival already had four other days of screening films in December, which included movies “Driving While Black,” “A Time to Act” and “Tell Them We Are Rising.”

Benn said all the films circled around the theme of biases.

“The purpose of the film fest is amplifying the Black experience on stage and creating safe space for a diverse audience to explore, dialogue and change for the better,” she said.

Dauphin County was a sponsor of the event, and WITF partnered with Sankofa, as well.

The screening on Monday at 7 p.m. featuring Elliott is free to the public, though registration is required. Benn said that donations are welcomed.

Because of the positive response to the screenings by the community, Benn said Sankofa is considering holding more events like this throughout the year.

“The conversation has been really good,” Benn said. “People are sharing they have really been enlightened on the issue of race.”
