The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Qui Qui Musarra, chef and an owner at Rubicon, Mangia Qui, & Suba, from a Dani Fresh photo feature in the May issue of TheBurg, which was released this week.

Around TheBurg, week six of the shutdown didn’t seem that different from weeks five, four, etc., etc. Amid the holding pattern, there was some bad news and some very good news. If you missed any of our coverage, we have it all listed and linked below.

COVID-19 pandemic continued to plague the commonwealth, and, each day, we reported on the health department’s grim tally. Click here for the latest update on cases and fatalities.

Gov. Tom Wolf offered further detail on beginning to dial back restrictions on movement and businesses. When will your area migrate from the red to the yellow category? Two online stories, one on Monday and one on Friday, offered information on counties that will make the move next week.

Harrisburg residents and officials should be commended for creatively stepping up to help those in need during the pandemic. So says our editor, who penned a blog post praising the local response to the crisis.

Harrisburg City Council
funded its portion of the new Neighborhood Business Stabilization Program, designed to inject funding into hurting city businesses. At its virtual legislative session, council also approved a couple of important development projects. Our online story has the details.

Invasive pests are a huge problem in Pennsylvania, especially as we transition to warmer weather. Our magazine feature describes the scope of the issue and how people can help.

One Midtown is a new Friends of Midtown program designed to encourage people to patronize local businesses during the pandemic. Read our online story–then show off your receipts!

Sara Bozich continues to stare out her window, hoping that one day she’ll be able to enjoy adult company again. Until then, she has a weekly list of virtual things to do this weekend and some local businesses to patronize.

TheBurg came out with our May issue, a bit slimmed down but still full of community news and features. We continue delivering the hard copy to places that are open for business, but encourage people to read it online, as well.

TheBurg team of reporters, writers, designers and artists picked up 16 Keystone Media Awards, including the coveted “sweepstakes” award for best overall performance in our category. What and who won? To find out, check out our proud editor’s blog post.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

A scene from the Reopen PA rally last week

COVID and more COVID summed up the week’s news for the n-th straight week. As we have before, we tried to cover it from many different angles—from daily state health department updates to features and opinion. We have all of our coverage listed and linked below.

COVID-19 pandemic seems to have plateaued for now but new cases and fatalities remain high statewide. Every day, we wrote a news story with the latest facts and figures from the state Department of Health, including the most recent update.

Earth Day celebrated its 50th anniversary this past week, so we shared our pre-COVID feature story with readers. It was a welcome break to a time when things seemed more normal, and we expected to have many Earth Day-related activities and celebrations.

Earth Day art exhibits were a real thing before the pandemic shut down galleries everywhere. Still, in his blog, our arts writer reflected on the golden anniversary of Earth Day and the artwork now stranded behind closed, locked doors.

“Friends of TheBurg” launched this week, TheBurg’s new membership program. Would you like to support our community journalism and receive some great benefits in the process? Read our editor’s introductory post to find out more.

Gov. Tom Wolf plans to begin lifting business restrictions and stay-at-home orders beginning on May 8 for certain, rural areas of PA. He also unveiled a three-color system to indicate a gradual, regional return to normalcy. We had the news stories this week.

“Grub for Scrubs” launched last week, a program that uses donations to buy meals from local restaurants that are then donated to health care workers. It’s the brainchild of local firm, andculture, and we have the story in our online feature.

Harrisburg finances remain relatively stable despite the general economic chaos, according to the city’s finance director. Questions remain about the future, but, so far, the city seems to be weathering the crisis better than some other local jurisdictions, he said. Find out more from our news story.

Impact Harrisburg, along with the city, have begun a $1 million grant fund to help support small businesses. The “Business Stabilization Program” will award as much as $10,000 to help city businesses weather the economic crisis. We have the details in our online story.

“One Midtown” launches this weekend, a new program designed to encourage people to support Midtown businesses during the pandemic. Friends of Midtown is asking locals to show their love for their neighborhood by buying local. Get all the details in our online story.

PA Liquor Control Board is opening up many more state-owned liquor stores for phone ordering and curbside pickup. This includes many stores in the greater Harrisburg area. Read our online news story for all the spirited details.

“Reflections Amid the Pandemic” was the title of a blog post by contributing writer Karen Hendricks. In a beautifully written piece, she weighs the surreal experience of trying to live a life during a bizarre time that seems to be our “new normal.”

“Reopen PA” arrived in Harrisburg last week, in the form of a rally at the state Capitol. Equal parts protest and Trump rally, attendees honked horns and waved signs for hours to show support for returning life to normal in PA. We attended and brought back a story.

Sara Bozich swears that she’ll leave her house one day. But, in the meantime, she lists a bunch of online things to do over the weekend, as well as links to great businesses to support.

Weekend Roundup with Sara Bozich

Here’s to hoping your week was one with more good days than bad — I know we’re all on a rollercoaster.

My toddler is finally (finally?) starting to show fatigue of being around us boring old parents all the time, and even Paw Patrol isn’t as much of a lure. I’m going to have to start getting creative, because it seems like work is ramping up.

We’re seeing more and more food trucks in our ‘hood each week, which is cool. A local winery even did pickup and purchase alongside a food truck last night. If you’re a local winery or brewery interested in doing this, give me a shout.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Groceries await at the Salvation Army Harrisburg pickup area.

Our locked-down life hit a month this past week, with few signs that the quarantine would end anytime soon. The state reported fewer new COVID-19 cases for much of the week before another spike on Friday. Meanwhile, the Harrisburg area said good-bye to two prominent local figures felled by the disease. If you missed any of our coverage, we have it all listed and linked below.

COVID-19 pandemic took two prominent Harrisburg-area residents last week: Gerald Welch and Joe O’Connor. We featured an online news story about Welch, a city school board director, and a blog post about O’Connor, written by our arts writer, who was also his fan and friend.

Federal stimulus checks began arriving in bank accounts this week. Many Harrisburg-area residents need the funds to pay for basic necessities. But, in a blog post, our editor asked the lucky ones who don’t need the money to spread it around generously.

Food banks and providers are under stress as demand has skyrocketed over the past month. Our online feature story examines how several local organizations are handling the demand, especially during a time of social distancing.

Gov. Tom Wolf gave a speech offering general guidelines on reopening the economy in Pennsylvania. He didn’t provide a timeframe, but said that more information would be coming next week. We covered the speech in an online story.

Grub for Scrubs is a new initiative with a twofold benefit. By making a donation, you can support local restaurants and buy a meal for frontline healthcare workers. Our online feature gives all the details of this win-win.

Harrisburg City Council conducted its first virtual meeting last week, holding a short legislative session. Among other matters, it approved funding to complete a road design for a slimmed-down State Street on Allison Hill. We had the story.

Harrisburg’s “Community Conversations” continued, with the city’s mayor interviewing school and nonprofit leaders. In our online story, you can learn more about support for businesses and for school students.

Home sales and prices in the Harrisburg area were relatively stable in March. We wrote up our monthly online update as we anxiously await next month’s report, which may be much more challenging.

Open Stage is going virtual, live-streaming its production of “Angels in America.” Sign up and log on for the most unique theater experience of your life. Our reviewer offers her thoughts on this virtual play.

PA Department of Health continued issuing daily updates on the COVID-19 pandemic’s spread in the commonwealth. We wrote up the data each day, and you can see the latest facts and figures by clicking here.

PennDOT deserves praise for reversing its stance on State Street, allowing a pedestrian safety project to proceed, according to our editorial. Over the years, our editor has been serially critical of PennDOT, but he compliments this change of heart and hopes it’s the start of more changes to Harrisburg’s many state-owned streets.

Sara Bozich is, yes, still at home. But, just like she has for a month now, she has suggestions for some great virtual events that you can attend, as well as links to places where you can buy something fun or yummy to help keep local businesses operating.

Weekend Roundup with Sara Bozich

I updated the title from Pandemic 5.0 to #StayHome because I think that’s a little gentler, and hey, we’re all doing the best we can, right? Last night, someone in my neighborhood arranged for Grappling Crab Shack to post up for a few hours, and you could either pre-order and pre-pay to walk-up and order on the spot. They had cones out to mark social distancing, gloves, and masks. We got a TON of food, and it was delicious. This was legitimately only the second night I haven’t cooked since we’ve been “in.” On Friday, MoMo BBQ is coming, so that’ll be night #3. Can’t wait. Lots of food trucks are doing similar things, and if you’re interested, reach out to these folks (they typically have decent website or at least a FB presence to gain contact info) to organize a night in your ‘hood.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Gamut’s theater in downtown Harrisburg

Life has become all-COVID, all the time, which is reflected in our news coverage, as well. This past week, we addressed the issue in several different ways, including breaking news, features and even in our monthly podcast. If you missed any of our stories, we have them all listed and linked below.

COVID-19 pandemic dominated the news once again, with the state’s grim press briefings a daily event. Click here to read the latest update from the Department of Health.

David Black, CEO of the Harrisburg Regional Chamber & CREDC, describes his organization’s role during this unprecedented economic crisis and offers tips for small businesses. Read what he has to say, in a story that complements the monthly Burg Podcast.

Gamut Theatre scrubbed the remainder of its 2019-20 season, which includes the popular annual “Shakespeare in the Park.” As our online news story states, the theater will remain closed for public performances through at least Sept. 1.

Harrisburg businesses and schools were among the topics discussed during another of Mayor Papenfuse’s “Community Conversations” on Facebook Live. The pandemic has affected both greatly, and our online story focuses on what is being done to address these enormous challenges.

Harrisburg housing is a tough issue that seems almost impossible to resolve. But why is that? In his monthly column, our editor explores why the city can’t seem to address its housing shortage, whether affordable or market-priced.

PA schools will remain closed for the remainder of the academic year, the state announced this past week. This applies to schools of every stripe, which now need to find ways to educate students outside of the physical classroom. Our online news story has the announcement.

Religious communities have been forced to quickly adapt to societal isolation, made especially difficult during April’s numerous sacred celebrations. Our online feature describes how several local congregations are trying to adjust.

Sara Bozich spent another week at home, like most everyone else. Nonetheless, she’s plugging away at her weekly blog, which has suggestions for virtual activities and ways to support local businesses.

TheBurg Podcast, April edition, dropped this past week, featuring segments on how the pandemic is affecting local businesses and the arts community. Host Karen Hendricks also features a story on hiking locally and our editor’s “Most Harrisburg Thing.” Give it a listen!

UPMC Pinnacle offered advice on how to stay safe during that inevitable trip to the grocery store or while getting takeout. Read their recommendations in an online column.

The Week that Was: News and events around Harrisburg

PA Gov. Tom Wolf (right) at one of his virtual press briefings this past week

The coronavirus pandemic showed no sign of easing this week, nor did news about it. Once again, it dominated our lives and the news cycle. If you missed any of our coverage, we have all of our stories listed and linked below.

Artsfest will go virtual this year, as the coronavirus pandemic puts a halt to large gatherings. Read our online story to find out what Harrisburg has planned.

COVID-19 cases continued to surge in Pennsylvania, as evidenced by the state Department of Health’s daily briefings. We write updates every day, with the most recent data statewide and locally.

Harrisburg deployed portable toilets to several locations around the city, mainly for use by the homeless population. These facilities join another group deployed last week on Market Street, as well as sinks in several city parks. Click here to read our online news story.

Harrisburg’s local tax filing deadline has been extended to mid-July, as have the federal and state deadlines. Our online news story has additional details of the change.

Hope Tree of Central PA may look like your average sycamore, except when it’s all lit up after the sun goes down. A local couple, in addition to the city, hopes the tree serves as a source of inspiration and a way to raise funds for small businesses hurt by the health and economic crisis. Read our online feature story here.

Nonprofits in the Harrisburg area are being dramatically affected by the COVID-19 epidemic. In his most recent “Community Conversation,” Mayor Papenfuse spoke to leaders of local nonprofits. Click here to find out what they said.

PA residents should wear face masks when going out in public, according to new state guidance. Gov. Tom Wolf cited the growing COVID-19 health emergency to justify the recommendation. Our news story offers greater detail.

Sara Bozich, like the rest of us, continues to be trapped indoors. But, in her weekly blog, she has a few ideas for virtual meet-ups and some ways to support local businesses.

The “stay-at-home” order quickly escalated this past week, going from clusters of counties to statewide. What does this mean exactly? We have Gov. Wolf’s list of allowed and not allowed activities in our news stories.

TheBurg dropped our April issue this past week. We had to scale back delivery of the print issue because so many distribution locations are closed. We actually recommend reading it online to prevent needing to make a special trip outside.
