The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Harrisburg and local officials announced the annual Ice & Fire Festival at a press conference this week.

Our March issue of the magazine is hot off the press, so make sure you grab a copy and read all of this month’s featured stories. This weekend is also exciting as the city will host its annual Ice & Fire Festival. Stop by our Midtown office to see our ice sculpture and grab the new issue! But first, all of this week’s news is linked below.

The Broad Street Market’s temporary tent for vendors displaced by the fire is closer to opening, our online story reported. The city shared that the tent will open in the spring, thanks in part to a donation of plumbing services by McClure Company.

Dauphin County announced that it would now accept glass for recycling at the Dauphin County Recycling Center, our online story reported. The new location adds to Harrisburg’s list of 10 drop-off containers.

The Harrisburg School District’s building configuration will change for the upcoming school year, our reporting found. Receiver Dr. Lori Suski approved moving students out of schools like Scott Elementary and Rowland Middle School and into others like Camp Curtin Middle School and the Lincoln Administration Building.

Harrisburg University is accepting applications for its Financial Literacy Scholarship Competition, our online story reported. The school is giving high school students a chance to earn a little cash and a scholarship, while promoting responsible money management.

The Harrisburg Zoning Hearing Board turned down a Midtown development project’s requested relief from parking requirements at a meeting on Monday, our online story reported. The board stated that they wanted the apartment project proposed for 320 Reily St. to provide the total amount of spots required by the zoning code.

Ice & Fire Festival is returning to Harrisburg on Saturday, our online story reported. The event will take place throughout the city and feature ice sculptures, food and live music.

Open Stage’s “Sweeney Todd” is “peppered with darkly comedic spots, infused with intense suspense, and splashed with just a little taste of gristly gore,” says our theater reviewer. The show will run through March 16.

Our publisher shared in his column that he’s happy to see the community supporting the Broad Street Market and its vendors. Again, he implores people to continue shopping and dining at the market.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) objected to the sale of Governor’s Square, a bankrupt and blighted low-income housing development in Harrisburg, our reporting found. Additionally, the court hearing to determine a buyer for the property has been continued.

Zembo Shrine in Harrisburg announced that it is now on the National Register of Historic Places, our online story reported. The Shriners hope that the new designation will allow them to apply for additional grants and show the community that they are here to stay.

Ward of Health cut the ribbon on its new downtown Harrisburg location.

Dr. Charles Crampton broke racial barriers and rose to prominence in early 20th century Harrisburg, but not without setbacks and scrutiny, our magazine story reported. However, his local legacy is still seen through the youth he inspired.

Harrisburg City Council approved a contract with SitelogIQ to develop a five-year capital improvement plan, our reporting found. The company will evaluate the city’s buildings, facilities and energy utilization, among other assets and make recommendations.

Nyeusi Gallery has a new art director—local artist Steve Barber. In our magazine story, read about Barber and what it means for him to be the director of the area’s only dedicated Black art gallery.

The Susquehanna Art Museum is showcasing a rare collection of its art in the exhibit “From Mantel to Museum: The Eclectic Legacy of Patricia L. Murray,” our magazine story reported. The exhibit emphasizes the connection between art collectors, the museums they donate to and the communities they serve.

Veteran’s Grove, a community of tiny homes for unhoused veterans in Harrisburg, is nearing completion, our online story reported. This week, the project made progress as a local business volunteered its time and resources to install windows and doors on the 15 tiny houses.

Ward of Health cut the ribbon on its new downtown Harrisburg restaurant, our online story reported. The business, a former Broad Street Market vendor, offers plant-based menu items.

It seems like Harrisburg may be in for some more snow this weekend. Whether you love it or hate it, the weather does make a great excuse to stay home at catch up on your Burg reading. You can start below.

Apartment project proposals received approval from the Harrisburg Planning Commission recently, our online story reported. A 144-unit building at 320 Reily St. received preliminary approval for zoning relief, and the board also voted in favor of a land development plan for a 36-unit senior housing building in Midtown.

Democrats in Harrisburg will have an array of choices in the upcoming primary election. In our online story, see who will officially be on the ballot for Congress and the state legislature.

Diverse literature is something local educator Corey Dupree believes all children should have access to, our magazine story reported. In March, he will host his Little Layers of Black History Gala to raise funds for diverse books for schools.

Home prices in the Harrisburg area dipped in January, while prices were higher, our online story reported. For the three-county area, sales totaled 358 houses versus 389 in January 2023, as the median sales price rose to $258,000 from $245,000.

Pennsylvania Furniture Mission helps people make a house a home. The organization, which serves six counties, provides furniture to those in need, our magazine story reported.

Pirates, puppets and rock and roll will come to Harrisburg for a one-of-a-kind musical in April, our online story reported. The show, “Plunder and Lightning: A Pirate’s Life – The Musical,” is interactive, humorous and fun for all, cast members shared.

The Harrisburg Food Pantry cut the ribbon on its new location in the Camp Curtin YMCA.

Bob’s Art Blog is dedicated to stories of love for February, featuring the story of two Millworks artists and a new exhibit at the Susquehanna Art Museum.

Harrisburg Area Food Pantry cut the ribbon on its new location inside the Harrisburg Area YMCA’s Camp Curtin branch, our online story reported. The pantry will assist thousands of residents struggling with food insecurity.

HU Presents announced four new concerts coming to XL Live as part of its spring and summer lineup, our online story reported. Neon Trees, The Heavy Heavy, Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram will hit the stage.

Justin Douglas made history as his election marked the first time Dauphin County’s board of commissioners had been Democratically controlled in over a century. In our magazine story, read about Douglas’ background and priorities while in office.

The Week that Was: News and features around Harrisburg

Broad Street Market Alliance Board meeting on Wednesday

Our February issue of the magazine came out this week, specifically highlighting stories celebrating Black history and culture. We hope you learn something new and are inspired by our stories this month. Grab your copy at one of our distribution locations, but before you do so, catch up on our weekly reporting, below.

Bike share in Harrisburg may be on pause for the winter, but Tri-County Regional Planning Commission, the program operator, has shared its plans for the 2024 season. Starting this spring, Susquecycle will introduce new station locations and upgrades.

The Broad Street Market Alliance board approved a 25% rent raise for vendors in order to raise additional funds for the market, which is currently operating at a deficit, our story reported. The market also weighed a proposal from Midtown Property Management for free services.

The Broad Street Market received two proposals for plumbing work on its temporary market structure, our online story reported. A few weeks before, the city secured a bid for electrical work, as well.

Candidates for the 10th congressional district reported their fundraising totals, our online story reported. One candidate, Blake Lynch, has also received an endorsement from Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams.

Dauphin County Treasurer Nick DiFrancesco announced that he would pursue the Republican nomination for the 15th senatorial district, our online story reported. He said that he would focus on such issues as schools, safety and the economy.

February events will celebrate the season of love and Black History Month through art, music and food. Check out our Community Corner for special featured events, as well as our long list of Happenings.

Harrisburg University shared that Dr. Steven Jasinski, a professor at the school, had identified and described a new species of large, predatory dinosaur, Tyrannosaurus mcraeensis, our online story reported. Jasinski has been describing and naming dinosaur finds for years.

Harrisburg’s walkability, urban neighborhoods, nature and proximity to larger cities are its greatest strengths. According to our publisher, the city should embrace that destiny to attract residents.

Leon Laing, a local photographer, will display a collection of his work at Harrisburg’s city hall through March, our online story reported. Laing’s photography is focused on celebrities and hip-hop musicians.
