The Arts Squared: In downtown Harrisburg, cultural events enhance church, community

Barbara Passeri-Warfel

Houses of worship meet many needs—spiritual, communal and educational. Increasingly, they also offer arts and cultural programs.

Though not unique to churches in downtown Harrisburg, one standout program is Arts on the Square, a series of musical and visual arts events presented by Market Square Presbyterian Church.

Launched in the 2019-20 season with a program that included a concert by the Vienna Boys Choir, Arts on the Square’s next season was suspended by the COVID-19 pandemic, but has resumed continuously since.

“It is the congregation’s desire to share with the community the beauty and majesty of God through music and art,” said communications manager John Robinson.

Held throughout the church’s calendar year, the programs feature international, national and local musical performers and often local or regional visual artists. Artistic director Tyler Canonico, minister of music and organist at the church, and art gallery coordinator Beth Hager plan a program with the help of a team of nearly a dozen volunteers.

The kind of music featured in Arts on the Square is varied, ranging from sacred to pop, from the classics to jazz, said Canonico. In this context, the arts are more than artistic.

APOLLO5

This season includes world-famous German concert organist Felix Hell, who last played at Market Square Church in 2000, when he was 14 years old. “Carols by Candlelight” features the Sanctuary Choir and orchestra, with carols sung by the audience. APOLLO5 is a pre-eminent British vocal ensemble singing in a wide variety of styles. And for the first time, a silent film classic, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” will be shown, with dramatic accompaniment by New York City organist Jason Roberts.

“The church is one of the premier venues in the city,” Canonico said. “We use the beautiful sanctuary, with recently enhanced acoustics, for musical performances and historic Geneva Hall for visual arts exhibitions. Our choir regularly performs with orchestra or our organ, the newest in the city, built in 2019.”

Among the featured visual artists this year is Barbara Passeri-Warfel of New Cumberland. She will offer an eclectic mix of paintings, drawings and fabric wall hangings. Next up, Market Square Church members Susan Hoover and RonPoorman will present “Camera Perspectives,” a photographic joint exhibition.

“We can hang about 40 to 50 works in Geneva Hall,” Hager said.

In 2023, Friends of Arts on the Square was established to allow church members and the public to support its programming through a membership organization.

“These donations, as well as support from foundations and others, allow us to offer free or low-cost programs to everyone in our community,” said Robinson.

Market Square Presbyterian Church is located at 20 S. 2nd St., Harrisburg. For more information, visit www.marketsquarechurch.org/concerts.

Bob’s Art Blog: Activism through Art

There must be something in the water in Carlisle.

A wellspring of creativity bubbles forth, all starting at the Carlisle Arts Learning Center (CALC) and branching out to communities near and far. Sparking social discourse from conduits, aqueducts and faucets from Cumberland County west to Pittsburgh, their messages hold impact across the state of Pennsylvania. In terms of communicating ideas and promoting causes, there may be no more powerful vehicle to do so than art. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the question comes, what medium will have the greatest impact in advancing this message?

With the month of May being dedicated to mental health, galleries showcase three disparate areas of need, all worthy of social commentary. The trio is inexplicably appropriate in that arts activism addresses the much-needed conversation around the umbrella of helping and saving mankind, one cause at a time.

Art advocacy takes center stage this month from Cumberland County to Midtown Harrisburg, and even to the state Capitol. Youth initiatives, gun violence and mental health all represent topics for discussion and action.

“Children Thrive with the Basics 5!” at CALC

Mo Geiger, an art activist/educator instrumental in so many Cumberland County art movements and productions, mounted the interactive exhibit currently at the YMCA in Carlisle and at CALC through the end of the summer. The upper gallery at CALC embraces the platitude, “Care and love go hand in hand as both are complex components of life through all stages, ages and relationships.” The exhibit, “Children Thrive with The Basics 5!,” which opened April 19 and runs through May 25, is presented in partnership with the United Way in Carlisle and Cumberland County. For the exhibit, five artists interpreted and visualized tips for positive interactions with young children. View works from Artzbeat, Luke Gawron, Molly Goehring, Michelle Moats and Carol Reed. Concurrently, the exhibit at Carlisle’s YWCA showcases large-scale reproductions of the original artwork on display at CALC.

Coming up soon from the Carlisle Arts Learning Center, the timely topic of gun violence will be seen through the lens of the exhibit, “American Roulette” and will be on view at H*MAC in Midtown Harrisburg from May 21 to June 23. It will provide a visceral exploration through imagery in collaboration with the Charles Bruce Foundation, which supported eight local authors as they wrote a novel, “American Roulette,” about a mass shooting. Abria Donato, gallery director of CALC shared, “The goal of this exhibit is to be a catalyst for local and regional conversations fueled by this national crisis…it is easy to become numb and tune out the tragedy. Half of the effective conversation is listening. How can we become better listeners around the conversation of gun violence in America?”

As a special note of interest, 70 portraits and quotes from participants in the “I’m Fine.” project workshops adorn the doors of senators’ offices on two floors at the state Capitol building. Six years ago, when Carrie Breschi and Maureen Joyce formulated the idea for their “I’m Fine.” project, they had no idea that sculpting mental health through art would take them across the state for workshops and mask making promoting mental health wellness. The project culminated in a three-month tour de force exhibit of over 1,200 masks on view in the upper gallery of Susquehanna Art Museum (SAM). “I’m Fine” at the museum was a massive undertaking in collaboration with Alice Anne Schwab, executive director of SAM, and Bonnie Mae Carrow, director of exhibitions.

To celebrate the closing of this powerhouse exhibition, the founders are holding pop-up events at ModernRugs just across the street from SAM. Artists and creatives are offering unique giftware for purchase in support of the project. One of the specialty items at the art market is a stunning Ginkgo necklace by artist/jeweler, Alison Rosen. The “I’m Fine.” project’s trademark logo features the ginkgo leaf, symbolic of resilience and longevity. These pop-ups will be held on Thursday through Saturday, May 9 to 11, and May 16 to 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the ModernRugs showroom at 1404 N. 3rd St. Closing celebration events take place Friday, May 17 for 3rd in The Burg at SAM and ModernRugs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Art is the great communicator of ideas, causes and change. The clock is ticking on mental health awareness, creating crucial childhood initiatives and eliminating gun violence all in the hopes of making our world a safer and better place and mankind a gentler species.

Have Art . . . Will Travel: This month, skate on over to Smith Fine Art

Drake Music Conservatory inside Smith Fine Art Gallery

This second installment of “Have Art…Will Travel” takes us to a local landmark just across the river from Harrisburg to the now-arrived hipster borough of New Cumberland.

January travel can be as unpredictable as keeping New Year’s resolutions. But to ensure safe passage on your travels, I decided to play it close to the vest. Mere minutes from Midtown, you will find the destination, the home of The Smith Gallery & Fine Custom Framing. Hop in.

Framing Your Life

When one pulls up to The Smith Gallery, the first impression is “Art”—with a capital “A.”

On the building’s exterior wall, “framing” its entrance, is a picture-postcard collage featuring artwork from a few of the area’s well-known local artists. The subliminal message sent—this is a destination that takes its art seriously—is a personal invitation from proprietress, Debbie Smith.

Socrates, thousands of years ago, shared that “the way to gain a good reputation is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear.” That’s the very foundation that Debbie Smith has built her business on, frame by frame. She has been the sole owner for 25 years, taking over operations after her father passed. What started in 1987 primarily as a frame shop for custom work has since grown into an art mecca under her leadership. The motto above the building’s doorway says it all, “Purveyors of Fine Art, Framers of Distinction.”

Arriving at our destination, we couldn’t deny art’s role in every nook and cranny, never far from mind or reach. By Debbie’s count, the gallery represents 30 artists. Reputation is what she hangs her hat on or, in her case, her signature eyewear.

When meeting Debbie, one of the first things people notice are the stylish specs that frame her face. They dramatically change daily, dependent upon the color choice of her wardrobe. They have become synonymous with her persona that is full of “P’s and Q’s.” She is poised, precise, polished and professional. As for the “Q,” you may need to “queue” up in line as the customer counter can become quite congested for the “quality” service that Smith delivers with each and every order.

That quotidian quality stems from surrounding herself with skilled strategists and tacticians. The team shares an esprit-de-corps, unifying them in a common goal.

Nancy is Smith’s right-hand woman. A trained carpenter, she knows what is required in all aspects, from frame molding, matting, glazing and assemblage. For 10 years, she has carried out Debbie’s vision to a “T.” Assisting them in the gallery shop is Elaine, an artist herself who specializes in working with clients on specific needs. In addition are Mallory, who employs “conservation techniques,” and Mariah, who is “a seasoned custom framing designer.” Lastly is the owner’s mother, confidante and inspiration, Polly Smith. A retired music teacher from New Cumberland, Polly is a fixture at the grand piano for art receptions in the spacious Drake Gallery, the music conservatory room.

Together, they form a team to create a powerhouse presentation, both in the showroom and backstage. The Smith Gallery is all about family and making memories, capturing them forever under glass. Debbie learned the trade and art of framing from her father, her best friend and mentor. Working with the public came as a natural extension of her extroverted personality, just as she mastered the technical end of the business. Clients range from walk-ins like us, sent there by recommendation for small custom work orders, to powerhouse players like the Milton Hershey School, which required a major overhaul of art and pictures placed throughout the students’ homes on campus.

For a business that started solely as a frame shop, Debbie Smith has grown it into two-thirds framing and one-third art, pushing the boundaries of the latter to the foreground. In our area, it has become the go-to shop for archival restoration, preservation and conservation. Customers trust Debbie’s instincts, and artists value her attention to creating the niche appeal that will set their art apart.

The Smith Gallery & Fine Custom Framing is poised for its next quarter century. It is evident that Debbie’s tomorrows hold a horizon waiting to be explored and, in her own words, “I will be eternally grateful to my mom and dad, to my staff and to my customers for wanting to be the best I can be by giving the best product and service there is.” Just like the sign above the door reads, that says it all.

The Smith Gallery & Fine Custom Framing is located at 190 Reno Ave., New Cumberland. For more information, visit www.smithcustomframing.com.

Local artists highlight farmland preservation in exhibit featured in state Capitol

Farmland Preservation Artists of Central PA members in the state Capitol building

This fall, visitors to the state Capitol building can get a glimpse into the region’s natural beauty, as seen through the eyes of local artists.

Artwork by the Farmland Preservation Artists of Central Pennsylvania is on display in the Capitol in October, to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the state’s farmland.

“To have our artwork here is such an honor,” Martha Grout Taylor, president of the arts organization, told TheBurg, following a press conference. “What we are hoping is that our elected officials will see the art and say, this is important to Pennsylvania, and that it will raise awareness of farmland preservation.”

Art featured in the Capitol

The exhibit, on display in the Capitol’s East Wing Rotunda, features 51 works of art by 14 Pennsylvania artists. Each piece depicts a scene from central Pa. farmland.

The arts organization was formed in 2005 as a joint effort by the Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania and the Centre County Farmland Trust. The group works to promote the preservation of the land through their art, as well as raise money for the two organizations. According to Taylor, the farmland preservation artists group holds around three exhibits each year.

Art included in the October exhibit at the Capitol is for sale and a portion of the proceeds will support the art alliance and farmland trust.

“These artists inspire us to work toward their vision to help the central Pennsylvania region and all of Pennsylvania preserve farmland,” said Dan Guss, president of the Centre County Farmland Trust. “Together, with preservationists and legislators, we will collaborate to make their vision a reality.”

For more information about the Farmland Preservation Artists of Central Pennsylvania, visit their website.

Sprocket Mural Works celebrates new Harrisburg mural in full bloom

Sprocket Mural Works and Harrisburg Young Professionals officials, among others, cut the ribbon on the newest city mural.

A new work of art has brought a colorful garden to N. 3rd Street in Harrisburg.

On Tuesday, Harrisburg arts organization Sprocket Mural Works, along with community partners, cut the ribbon on its newest mural, a sprawling display of bright flowers.

The mural, located at 1205 N. 3rd St., is inspired by local artist Suzanne Rende’s own garden. The painting, which took her 18 days to create, showcases flowers in bloom, butterflies, bees and other garden critters.

“Murals like this bring communities together,” Rende said. “It’s important to put positive ideas out there.”

The mural, sponsored by Harrisburg Young Professionals (HYP), is one of over 80 murals that Sprocket has completed in the region since 2014.

“We believe at Sprocket that murals are so much more than beautiful landmarks,” said Megan Caruso, Sprocket co-founder. “We believe that murals bring people together around a sense of belonging and pride.”

The mural adorns the side wall of a mixed-use building owned and recently renovated by Harrisburg-based WCI Partners.

According to HYP President Olivia Edwards-Rindfuss, the organization wanted to gift the mural to the city in honor of HYP’s 25th anniversary.

“It’s an honor to provide this beautiful space for all who come to Harrisburg city,” she said.

Oasis for Art: The Art Center is a haven for creativity, community

Pottery and glass blowing are among the many classes available at The Art Center School and Galleries.

On a recent Thursday, artists from around the area arrived at the Art Center School and Galleries for one of several classes for the evening.

Potters, glassblowers and water colorists greeted each other as old friends. The center, located in a beautiful barn on the outskirts of Mechanicsburg, is special to all as it gives them an opportunity to create, socialize and forget about life’s stressors.

“It’s hard to think about the Visa card bill when you are focused on keeping a vase straight,” said board member Justin Pettingell.

Next year, the center will celebrate its 70th anniversary. Over the decades, it has seen a lot of changes, including uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but its passionate members are now back and fully engaged.

Board members Tina Antonicelli and Bill Klaiber are a full-time husband and wife volunteering team.

Klaiber is a retired Mechanicsburg High School art and photography instructor. The 71-year-old has been coming to the Art Center since he was 16 years old, so he and Tina know firsthand how important it is to the local community.

Pettingell tells a similar story. The center displayed his art when he was in high school. Decades later, he rediscovered his passion and now teaches glassblowing classes in a studio that he and others constructed in the center’s basement.

Art also gives many people the chance to manifest their personality in ways their full-time jobs prohibit. For instance, Pettingell is employed as a grants processor, which he describes as a very “black and white” position.

Similarly, Jody Boyer works full-time in the healthcare industry. The pottery instructor joined the center in 2001 after completing her master’s degree.

“I wanted to take a class that didn’t have any homework,” she recalled.

Boyer developed an affection for the pottery wheel, and she now has a studio in her home. Working solo in her own space gives her control over many aspects of her art, but the Art Center offers community. More than 20 years after she attended her first class, Boyer continues to learn from those around her.

“My students challenge me,” she said. “They will often ask me to teach them to make pieces I have never made, so I need to learn first.”

Pettingell agrees and notes that the Art Center’s other glassblowing instructor, Michael Peluso, is one of his mentors.

“About half of my class is stuff he does, too,” Pettingell said.

The Art Center also features a large gallery space where work on display changes monthly. Anyone interested in viewing pieces is welcome to visit on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 7 p.m. From Sept. 8 to 26, instructors such as Pettingell and Boyer will have creations on display during the “School Days: Our Instructors’ Show.”

The center isn’t all adults who need a break from life’s stressors. Children attend classes there, too, and some adult classes are open to interested and responsible teenagers. Full and partial scholarships are available for families who are unable to afford tuition costs.

The Art Center’s members and instructors are a tightknit group, but they are always willing to open the barn doors for new members. Established artists who are interested in teaching should contact the center to pitch an idea. Those looking to take a class can explore the center’s many offerings, including glassblowing, painting, pottery, jewelry making and photography.

“Producing art is a sign of a society that is progressing. It is a sign of a society that is celebrating where they are and what they are doing,” Pettingell said. “Any way I can be part of that is special.”

The Art Center School and Galleries is located at 18 Artcraft Dr., Mechanicsburg. For more information, visit
