What Should I Do? Advice sought, advice given at Open Stage’s “Tiny Beautiful Things”

Karen Ruch (right) with Joellen Terranova, two cast members of “Tiny Beautiful Things.” Photo courtesy of Marc Faubel.

As humans, we ask for advice on a daily basis.

We may ask our waiters what they might recommend on the menu. At the doctor’s office, you might ask why your neck makes that weird popping sound when you turn it to the left and what to do about it. If you’re feeling adventurous, you might venture on to Nextdoor or Facebook to inquire about various neighborhood events.

There are other kinds of advice we ask of the more intimate sort—advice on extremely personal, embarrassing or life-changing decisions that need a second opinion. We ask a friend or family member or maybe a therapist, and these more serious pleas might be whispered over a coffee, in the corner of a cafe, or sent via a text that may have been written and rewritten a dozen times.

“I think my boyfriend is an alcoholic. How do I help him?”

“I’m almost certain my teenager is gay. What do I do if he comes out to me?”

“I don’t love my wife anymore. How do I leave her?”

Asking for advice can be difficult. It takes courage to expose the deepest parts of who we are. And that brings us to “Tiny Beautiful Things.”

In “Tiny Beautiful Things,” we meet Sugar, an advice columnist who shares correspondence from her time working at the online literary magazine, The Rumpus. During her stint as “Dear Sugar,” she hands out earnest and sometimes brutally honest advice, and, this spring, her story (and the stories of her letter-writers) will be shared at the intimate Studio Theater at Open Stage.

The play has had quite a journey from page to stage. It was originally published as a collection of essays in 2012 by Cheryl Strayed, who wrote the column pro bono for The Rumpus under the “Sugar” pseudonym. Strayed might be best known for her best-selling autobiographical novel “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail,” which details her fight with drug abuse and personal trauma to her journey of self-discovery on a single, 1,100-mile hike.

“Tiny Beautiful Things” was adapted to the stage in 2016 by Nia Vardalos (of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” fame) and ran in New York at the Public Theatre starring Vardalos for a sold-out run. The cultural significance of this story continues to spread. As of this April, Hulu will run the first season of a screen adaptation starring Kathryn Hahn.

Sugar is no “Dear Abby.” Her advice is not cut and dry; it is not simple. Her life experiences and traumas serve as a framework for her responses to her letter-writers, and it is blunt, but compassionate. It is empathetic and realistic. Throughout the show, the audience will come to understand why Sugar’s column was so popular. On this journey, Sugar is your friend, your therapist and your teacher.

So, of course, the part must be played by a true Renaissance woman. Taking on the role of Sugar is Karen Ruch, who has been seen on stages and behind the scenes all over central PA. Joining her as the “Letter Writers” are Chris Gibson, Jo Terranova and Jasmine Graham, who seek advice on subjects like the heartbreak of miscarriage or sexual assault, to marriage and relationship issues, to the importance of healing, self-love and forgiveness. The small and mighty cast puts on a performance that is vulnerable, stirring, sad and uplifting, all in an intimate, black box setting.

My advice to you? Don’t miss this show.

“Tiny Beautiful Things,” runs April 21 to May 7 at Open Stage, 25 N. Court St., Harrisburg, Tickets can be bought at the box office or online at www.openstagehbg.com.

Acts of Kindness, Consequence: Humanity, compassion take stage in first-ever Good at Heart Festival

As spring approaches, Open Stage prepares for its first annual “Good At Heart Festival” this month.

The festival will consist of Open Stage’s 23rd presentation of “The Diary of Anne Frank,” Sankofa African American Theatre Company’s presentation of “Anne and Emmett,” and several nights of conversation surrounding social justice, including Black NewsBeat with Dr. Kimeka Campbell, The Obstructed View and more.

What inspired the idea of the Good At Heart Festival? That is an honor that can only be attributed to Anne Frank.

“Anne Frank wrote, that, despite everything, she believes people are good at heart,” said Stuart Landon, artistic director of Open Stage. “And that is the driving force of her writing, in many ways, that we as an institution come back to again and again.”

This will be the 23rd year that Open Stages presents “The Diary of Anne Frank,” featuring four dates for morning matinees and one evening performance. As many as 4,000 students will be able to see Anne Frank’s story at the Scottish Rite Cathedral for the morning matinees (with limited available seating for the public), with a post-performance presentation by Holocaust expert, Lilian Rappaport. There also will be a Wednesday evening performance for the general public (with no post-performance discussion).

Landon thinks the content will hit a bit differently this year, as it’s the first time since the pandemic hit that “Diary” will be staged live.

“There’s something really special about it, because we went through an international trauma together, but not really together at all—we were isolated, living in a tumultuous time in our country,” he said. “Many countries are, when it comes to divisiveness politically, and there are so many echoes of our current world [in the play], and at the very least the emotions around what we’re dealing with.”

Another cornerstone of the Good At Heart Festival are some familiar characters.

“Anne and Emmett,” based on the book of the same name by Janet Langhart Cohen, and presented by Sankofa African American Theatre Company, is an exploration of what a conversation might be like between Anne Frank and Emmett Till from the beyond, or “in memory,” as Sharia Benn, artistic director of Sankofa, puts it.

The play joins these two young teenagers who experienced parallel hate and explores the topics of race, the times they lived in, and even gender perspective.

“There will be moments where the audience will be uncomfortable,” Benn said. “But we need to get into spaces where we go beyond just being uncomfortable—which leads us into silence and complacency—to where we can start to have healing, understanding and even acceptance that this happened… this is how it has impacted people, and that is real. Explore that.”

Benn described her process for choosing pieces for Sankofa as not only looking for content by and about the Black community, but also, “things that we can gather around—a diverse community, our diverse community, not just for a Black audience or a white audience, but to attract both, and different races and backgrounds, into one place so that we can have these meaningful and crucial conversations.”

And that is exactly what “Anna and Emmett” brings to the table—an invitation to delve into the shared experience that people across different races and religions have.

Hand in hand with the nights of conversation scheduled for that week, these two plays are sure to create a thoughtful, encouraging space for the type of discussion that the Good At Heart Festival was created to spark.

“Anne Frank wrote that she wanted her writing to live beyond her,” Landon said. “And has it! It is a great responsibility, and an honor, to take on this story every year and explore all the stories that need to be told.”

“The Good at Heart” Festival runs March 14 to 19 at Open Stage, 25 N. Court St., Harrisburg, and on March 15 at Scottish Rite Cathedral, 2701 N. 3rd St., Harrisburg. For more information, visit www.openstagehbg.com.

Happily Ever After? “Into the Woods” has new takes on some old tales

Cast of “Into the Woods”

We all know the story of Little Red Riding Hood, or Jack and the Beanstalk—in our mind’s eye, we’ve all seen Rapunzel letting down her long hair, and Cinderella dancing with the prince.

But what if there was a darker nuance to those stories that tradition has covered up in favor of happy endings? And do we even really know what a happy ending is?

“Into the Woods,” a musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine remixing and deconstructing our favorite Grimms’ fairy tales, takes a stab at answering these questions—and you will soon be able to see it come to life at Open Stage, directed by Stuart Landon.

Every narrative track in the story follows a famous fairy tale character, except one, which follows the Baker and his Wife, who want to break a curse that has prevented them from having a child. Alexis Campbell, who will play the Baker’s Wife in Open Stage’s rendition, is quick to point out the irony in her character not having an actual name.

“She’s just the ‘Baker’s Wife,’ and she’s never referred to anything past her connection to her husband,” she said.

And so her wish for happiness is also connected to the Baker, and yet—“She’s so independent. She has wants, too.”

Campbell paused and added a quick note.

“I think that a lot of women get caught up in what they can do for others and forget to do things for themselves,” she said.

In fact, it seems that many of the characters of “Into The Woods” have a skewed perception of what is at the end of the road to happiness. Like Cinderella, for example. Played by Chloe Acquaviva, she is not your typical Cinderella character sketch.

“She is ditzy and klutzy and not at all poised and classy like the Cinderella we’ve grown up with,” Acquaviva said. “She just wants to go to the ball.”

But then she meets the Prince, and he’s not at all what she hoped for. Each character begins to realize that they will have to work to be happy.

“And no one wants to work to be happy,” Landon said. “They just want it to happen.”

Landon mentioned that a small cast will play multiple characters in this fairy tale world, which brings a whole new element of fun to the stage. Though the story gets quite dark, he stressed its transformative magic.

“It’s still an enchanting show,” he said. “It’s a chance for the audience to get lost in another world and escape.”

“Into the Woods” runs Feb. 18 to March 11 at Open Stage, 25 N. Court St., Harrisburg. For more information, visit www.openstagehbg.com.

Scrooge Muse: Nicholas Hughes reflects on his long-time role as everyone’s favorite miser

The holiday season is upon us, and so, as is tradition, the crew at Open Stage is gearing up for “A Christmas Carol,” that wonderful Dickens tale featuring Nicholas Hughes as Ebeneezer Scrooge. I got the chance to interview Nick about his ongoing role in the production.

TheBurg: How many years have you been doing a Christmas Carol? Do you think it provides any challenges doing it so many years in a row?

Nicholas: I think the first year I did it was 2000. The biggest challenge is, I’m getting old! But obviously one knows most of the script, and, over the years, there have been different directors and substantial script changes. The original script had been adapted by Don Alsedek’s son and was very traditional—really the whole play was taken from the original Dickens book. But when Stuart [Landon] took over the direction, he adapted a much more modern version with substantial changes. And my own attempt to play Mr Scrooge changes every year—not only from myself, but also from my fellow cast members; they’re different every year. The balance changes, and their interpretation changes.

TheBurg: You’ve lived a long time with this character, though. What is the most surprising thing that Scrooge has taught you over the years?

Nicholas: Even though the play is, by Dickens’ standards, a very short story, he’s managed to concentrate a lot of emotional response—there’s the emotional response to Christmas, the season, and what it means to people, and also about Mr. Scrooge, the sort of man he was. I mean, he lived a very gray life. He just thought the only important thing was to gather money, and anybody who wasn’t involved in increasing their own wealth was of no interest. He really was a one-dimensional person. But over the course of the play, by the visitation of the ghosts, he sees that there’s a lot more to life, and so every year I do see that a little differently.

TheBurg: I’d hope you can’t completely relate to Scrooge, but is there anything you relate to?

Nicholas: I can imagine the sort of man that he used to be, and, as I grow older, I feel that I’m realizing a lot more of the importance of things in life that one doesn’t appreciate as a younger person. So, I do feel myself growing and changing as Scrooge does. Perhaps not quite in the same way.

TheBurg: What do you hope your audiences will take away from the performance?

Nicholas: For most people, they’re not entirely unfamiliar with the story. So, it’s like when you watch a television show or a movie that you’ve seen before, you do get a certain happiness in remembering things that you knew about the play before, but also seeing new things. The more people in the cast, it’s very good for the audience because all their friends and relatives come, and that’s nice. And then you get people who are traditionalists, and they come every year because that’s what they do. Some people come because it’s Dickens, some people come because it’s Christmas. Some people come because they know the plot and they love it. Obviously, there will be people who’ve never seen it before. But hopefully once they see it once, they’ll want to see it again—not just our version! The reason why it’s been done so often is that everybody feels that they can add something of their own. My favorite version is probably the one from, I think, the 1930s with Alastair Sim. [He] is so wonderful as Scrooge. He’s just so honest in his portrayal. You just feel that this is a real person, and that’s not so true with some of the other versions—like the Muppets.

TheBurg: Do you think some of Alastair Sim’s characterization comes across in your performance, or did you try to differ it enough…?

Nicholas: I would like to think so. I try to play it straight. Obviously, it’s something you can ham up, but I don’t think that’s the way to go.

Well, Nicholas Hughes has captured our hearts for years in this role, and I don’t doubt this year will be any different.
