Veterans to be honored with Taps on Armed Forces Day

Bugles Across America members at a previous event.

An upcoming event will honor veterans with traditional music.

Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville shared that it would host its annual Armed Forces Day Echo Taps ceremony on May 16, made even more significant by the 250th anniversary of the country.

“This occasion offers a special moment for reflection and gratitude, recognizing the sacrifices made by veterans and commemorating this important milestone in our country’s history,” said the organization’s press release.

The ceremony will feature a traditional three-volley rifle salute by the Vet 21 Salute Honor Guard of Lancaster and the Echo Taps, the sequential sounding of Taps throughout the cemetery by a corps of buglers from across the region.

The Pennsylvania chapter of Bugles Across America, which is sponsoring the event, will also perform a musical tribute at the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial at the cemetery. Chaplain (Colonel) Matthew Atkins of the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle will speak as well.

At the event, there will be a memorial book for friends and family to sign.

The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. in front of the cemetery’s administration building.

Musical Notes: Heartstrings

Music lovers, rejoice! There are a lot of great acts hitting stages in the region this month, here to satisfy your every need for funk, grooving or vibing out, so grab a friend and warm up on the dance floor. If you’ve been hunkering down this winter and watching movies more often than attending concerts, I’d love to hear if there were scores and soundtracks that made you tick, or if you immediately pulled out your phone to Shazam a song. Two movies I recently watched, “The Ugly Stepsister” and “Marty Supreme,” featured soundtracks that had me vibrating with excitement.

WORTH THE DRIVE

2/12, WXPN Welcomes Margo Price, Appell Center for the Performing Arts

Margo Price is an incredibly underrated musician, and I’m thrilled the singer-songwriter is coming back to the region in February. The folk/country sensation first wowed me about a decade ago with one of her breakout songs, “Hands of Time,” which is just gorgeous. Her 2025 album, “Hardheaded Woman,” is a collection of powerful songs and mantras built for strange times with an urgent and down-to-earth approachability (I especially love “Too Stoned To Cry,” which also features Billy Strings). I know it’s a bit of a hike to York, but it’s damn sure worth it to see and hear Price in action.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR

2/14, Lovers & Loners Valentine Bash, Capital City Music Hall; Minka Presents The Lover’s Ball, The Abbey Bar

Need a place to cut a rug with your main squeeze on Valentine’s Day? You’ve got options! There are not one but two dance parties in Harrisburg that night. The Lovers & Loners Valentine Bash at Capital City Music Hall promises love songs, breakup anthems and more with live performances from the Wyatt Becker Band, the Jess Zimmerman Band and Harmony Holler. Just a hop, skip and a jump away, Philly synth outfit Minka is bringing their sensual, experimental funk to the stage at The Abbey Bar for what they’re calling a “Lover’s Ball” to dance with your lover, or “possibly your future lover,” according to the event description.

TWISTING THINGS UP

2/17, Mdou Moctar solo show, The Abbey Bar

In June 2024, Nigerian rock quartet Mdou Moctar brought its “Funeral for Justice” tour to Harrisburg and delivered the kind of show that just challenges your perception of what musical genres are, and what they can transform into with the touch of a creative powerhouse. This time, frontperson Moctar returns to The Abbey Bar with his solo show, which will hopefully feature his signature psychedelic rock influences on Tuareg style guitar performances.

If you’re a musician and/or promoter, or a fan of a local artist, and you’d like to share some upcoming shows with TheBurg, drop me a line at [email protected]

Jazz camp offers students of all abilities chance to be immersed in music

2024 jazz camp

An upcoming camp will allow students to spend full days immersed in music.

Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz announced that its annual jazz camp will host youth from June 11 to 14, offering them a chance to learn from the best and jam with their peers.

The camp, which will take place at Messiah University, accepts students of all skill levels and with a variety of instruments, from saxophone to trombone, piano, guitar and several others.

“We really pride ourselves on the fact that it’s open to students of any ability,” said Camp Director Mark Hunsberger. “It’s really about helping to introduce young students to jazz.”

This year, students will learn from internationally renowned bassist and recording artist Rodney Whitaker, the camp’s spotlighted guest faculty member. Hunsberger described him as a “living legend” and noted that students will get to learn from him and attend his concert.

Additionally, students will take classes in music theory, jazz history and improvisation and participate in listening classes, rehearsals and jam sessions with peers.

High school student and saxophone player Ian Brookmyer has attended jazz camp for six years and sits on the Central PA Friends of Jazz board as a student representative. Brookmyer said that, when he first attended camp, he was in the beginner skill level group and now is in the top ensemble.

“It’s certainly helped me a lot in allowing me to advance,” he said. “You’re basically playing all day long for four days.”

Brookmyer plans to go to college to study music education, a goal that he said was further encouraged by his years at the camp.

The program is open to students ages 12 through 18.

Hunsberger said that the camp also helps connect campers to private lessons, further education and other opportunities. Many camp alumni have gone on to pursue musical careers and passions, he said.

“It’s incredible that we create space for them to be immersed in the jazz experience,” he said.

For more information on the Central PA Friends of Jazz camp, visit their website.

The Arts Squared: In downtown Harrisburg, cultural events enhance church, community

Barbara Passeri-Warfel

Houses of worship meet many needs—spiritual, communal and educational. Increasingly, they also offer arts and cultural programs.

Though not unique to churches in downtown Harrisburg, one standout program is Arts on the Square, a series of musical and visual arts events presented by Market Square Presbyterian Church.

Launched in the 2019-20 season with a program that included a concert by the Vienna Boys Choir, Arts on the Square’s next season was suspended by the COVID-19 pandemic, but has resumed continuously since.

“It is the congregation’s desire to share with the community the beauty and majesty of God through music and art,” said communications manager John Robinson.

Held throughout the church’s calendar year, the programs feature international, national and local musical performers and often local or regional visual artists. Artistic director Tyler Canonico, minister of music and organist at the church, and art gallery coordinator Beth Hager plan a program with the help of a team of nearly a dozen volunteers.

The kind of music featured in Arts on the Square is varied, ranging from sacred to pop, from the classics to jazz, said Canonico. In this context, the arts are more than artistic.

APOLLO5

This season includes world-famous German concert organist Felix Hell, who last played at Market Square Church in 2000, when he was 14 years old. “Carols by Candlelight” features the Sanctuary Choir and orchestra, with carols sung by the audience. APOLLO5 is a pre-eminent British vocal ensemble singing in a wide variety of styles. And for the first time, a silent film classic, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” will be shown, with dramatic accompaniment by New York City organist Jason Roberts.

“The church is one of the premier venues in the city,” Canonico said. “We use the beautiful sanctuary, with recently enhanced acoustics, for musical performances and historic Geneva Hall for visual arts exhibitions. Our choir regularly performs with orchestra or our organ, the newest in the city, built in 2019.”

Among the featured visual artists this year is Barbara Passeri-Warfel of New Cumberland. She will offer an eclectic mix of paintings, drawings and fabric wall hangings. Next up, Market Square Church members Susan Hoover and RonPoorman will present “Camera Perspectives,” a photographic joint exhibition.

“We can hang about 40 to 50 works in Geneva Hall,” Hager said.

In 2023, Friends of Arts on the Square was established to allow church members and the public to support its programming through a membership organization.

“These donations, as well as support from foundations and others, allow us to offer free or low-cost programs to everyone in our community,” said Robinson.

Market Square Presbyterian Church is located at 20 S. 2nd St., Harrisburg. For more information, visit www.marketsquarechurch.org/concerts.

Part Intention, Part Surprise: Market Square Concerts intros its 2024-25 season

Jasper String Quartet

Peter Sirotin doesn’t just shut his eyes and throw darts at a dartboard as a way of picking musical groups for a new season of shows.

As co-director of Market Square Concerts, he makes a “concerted” effort to have reasons for his choices. He listens, he connects, he thinks. Ask anyone who has enjoyed MSC’s rich variety of performances, and they’ll tell you that his picks are stellar.

“We spend a great deal of time listening to young performers and seasoned artists, as well as considering cultural relevance of different programs to our contemporary experience,” he said.

Sirotin also trusts his audiences. Their feedback plays a vital role, particularly in decisions about inviting artists back. Yet Sirotin will go beyond what is expected. He also loves to surprise and give music lovers new experiences. The 2024-25 season of shows is no exception.

These new experiences begin on Sept. 25 at Temple Ohev Sholom with the award-winning Calidore String Quartet, a group that debuted with MSC a few years ago and is back by popular demand. Described as intimate with a “refined balance,” and as having “grunge-band grit,” Sirotin admits to the group’s distinct style of playing.

“Calidore String Quartet offers an electric energy, tremendous dynamic range combined with an unusual clarity of individual voices,” he said. “I was thrilled to invite the Calidore String Quartet back for the opening of our season with a program exploring three centuries of string quartet evolution through compositions by Mozart, Beethoven and Korngold.”

Next on the schedule is the Philadelphia-based music ensemble Tempesta di Mare on Nov. 9 at the acoustically splendid St. Michael Lutheran Church on State Street. The program, “Cruel Amaryllis,” traces the evolution of madrigal in early 17th-century Italian music.

The popular “Stuart and Friends” program follows on Jan. 5 at Market Square Presbyterian Church. The event will celebrate Maestro Stuart Malina’s 25th anniversary in Harrisburg with two masterpieces: Messiaen’s transcendent “Quartet for the End of Time,” written during the darkest days of World War II, and Dvorak’s uplifting “Piano Quintet in A Major.”

Malina will be joined by clarinetist Richie Hawley, violinists Alexander Kerr and Peter Sirotin, violist Michael Isaac Strauss and cellist Julian Schwarz.

“I am really looking forward to performing the marvelous Dvorak Quintet with the group,” Sirotin said.

The following month, on Feb. 22 at Market Square Presbyterian Church, pianist Mark Markham will perform a recital showcasing groundbreaking works by Brahms, Ravel and other composers, written in their twenties. The recital is a part of Markham’s artistic residency in Harrisburg, which will include his appearance as a soloist with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, performing Ravel’s “Piano Concerto for the Left Hand.”

“This unique masterpiece was dedicated to pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in World War I but developed new techniques of playing, which allowed him to continue performing with the left hand alone,” Sirotin said. “In March of 2025, the world will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Ravel’s birth, which is a wonderful opportunity to bring Mark Markham back to Harrisburg for an artistic residency featuring Ravel’s music.”

On March 26 at the Derry Presbyterian Church in Hershey, the young, award-winning Trio Gaia from Boston will make its MSC debut. This delightfully eclectic program includes works by Schumann, Debussy, Reena Esmail and Gabriela Lena Frank, whose “Four Folk Songs” were inspired by melodic motifs and rhythms of her mother’s homeland, Peru.

Concluding the season on April 27 at Temple Ohev Sholom will be a performance by the award-winning Jasper String Quartet. The group will perform a playful and rustic program surveying folk influence in music by European, Russian, Korean and American composers from the classical era to present day.

Sirotin calls music a “powerful antidote to the growing anxiety and isolation in our society.” He has kept that power in mind as he went about creating this upcoming season. What will resonate with the audience? What will uplift listeners in these trying times?

“Attending live performances and sharing powerful musical experiences with people of different ages, backgrounds and political views help build community,” he said “Great music, like all great art, has an ability to connect us with the life experience of people from different eras and cultures. It entertains and inspires, provides emotional support and educates.”

July Musical Notes: Show Me Summer

It’s been a wild revolution around the sun, Harrisburg! As I sat down to start this piece, I realized that July marks a full year as your local music columnist, and I am so thrilled for the journey it’s taken us on, especially in a city so rich with amazing musical performances from its own talents and from its stages welcoming visiting marquee acts. There’s never been a better time to be a music enthusiast in the 717, and I hope you’re taking full advantage of all the arts scene here has to offer.

DROP THE BASS

7/12, Esseks, The Abbey Bar

Mmmsk, mmmsk, mmmsk. Dance and electronica have been having a moment on the Abbey Bar stage in recent months. Esseks, the performance moniker for Brooklyn producer Sam Eckstein, is a bass heavy project with some really crunchy and weird dance tracks. Eckstein also creates somewhat morbid-looking cartoons that complement his musical style well, and if you’re so inclined, I suggest checking them out on esseks.com. It’s definitely out there but the songs are catchy, and it should be a really fun time.

UNDER THE 10-GALLON HAT

7/13, Harrisburg University Presents Charley Crockett, XL Live

Did someone say cowboy summer? I don’t know about you, but I feel like I’ve really dipped into more modern country tracks on my shuffle in recent months (which would have been a blasphemous confession for me to make even five or six years ago). A repeat visitor on those playlists is Charley Crockett, a self-described “$10 Cowboy,” whose album of the same name came out earlier this year, the latest in a series of ambitious releases since 2015. Texas-born Crockett claims to be a descendant of Davy Crockett, and one will hear slight influences of hip-hop and funky soul in his style.

STARRY EYED SOUL

7/25, Harrisburg University Presents Black Pumas, Riverfront Park

Psychedelic soul duo Black Pumas reunited after a brief hiatus, and boy, was it worth the wait! They’re back in Harrisburg touring their spectacular 2023 record, “Chronicles of a Diamond,” which is just so much fun to listen to. I love their songs “Colors” and “Know You Better” from earlier albums but suggest getting acquainted with the sticky “Ice Cream (Pay Phone)” or the gorgeous “More Than a Love Song” from this most recent album. Order the tickets; thank me later.

DON’T MISS

7/28, Harrisburg University Presents Orville Peck, Riverfront Park

Last year, ahead of Orville Peck’s planned performance that was pushed to this summer, I wrote in an unreleased column, “If you’ve been sleeping on Orville Peck, I won’t hold it against you but strongly recommend you add the masked western crooner to your listening mix ASAP.” This time, there’s no excuse—you should absolutely be listening to this lovely, fringe-masked singer. Peck’s got a velvet voice, and his recently released album, “Stampede: Vol. 1,” shows off his sultry yet fresh style with collaborations featuring Willie Nelson, Elton John, Noah Cyrus, Nathaniel Rateliff and quite a few others. There is a tenderness in his style that just hurts so good, and I highly recommend catching him before it’s impossible to afford his shows. See you in the front row!

HONORABLE MENTIONS

7/4, Rob49, H*MAC

7/17, Brainstory, The Abbey Bar

7/17, The Taxpayers, Lovedrafts Brewing Co.

7/18, The Volunteers, H*MAC

7/19, Greensky Bluegrass, XL Live

7/19, The Depth Beneath Us, The Abbey Bar

7/24, Citizen Soldier, H*MAC

7/28, The Starting Line, H*MAC

7/28, Hinder, Lovedrafts Brewing Co.

Ned Smith Center hosts summer concert series, celebrates decade of music at its outdoor stage

DeSoto Amphitheater

With live music season fully underway, the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art has a full slate of shows for its annual summer concert series, while also celebrating the tenth anniversary of its DeSoto Amphitheater.

The series, which takes place at the amphitheater outside of the center’s building in Millersburg, began May 25 with the Pennsylvania Regional Ballet and will conclude Sept. 21 with Heart tribute band Heart by Heart. Other performances for the milestone year include Gamut Theatre’s Shakespeare in the Woods and Billy Joel’s original touring band, Lords of 52nd Street, which played this past Saturday.

Tenth anniversary festivities like decorations, giveaways, and donation drives will be a part of their concerts, which Amphitheater Volunteer Coordinator and Arts & Entertainment Committee member Linda Enders considered to be “the cherry on top of the sundae,” adding to an already exciting season.

The concert series began before the amphitheater was built and was pioneered by its namesake, Carole DeSoto, a long-time patron of the arts in the region. Arts & Entertainment Committee Chairperson Christopher Dietz said DeSoto is a “visionary” who has been “instrumental” in many community-improvement projects such as bringing the Harrisburg Area YMCA to northern Dauphin County and the expansion of the Dauphin County Library System.

“I think the amphitheater is a similar extension of that vision and bringing a cultural component…maybe folks would not have the opportunity to see a ballet in person or Shakespeare performance,” Dietz said.

Accessibility and welcoming all have been goals from the very beginning, said Ned Smith Operations Manager Alexandra Singer.

“You shouldn’t have to worry about how much change is in your pocket to come here and have a good time,” Singer said. “Mother nature doesn’t have a price tag and we try to limit ours greatly.”

The amphitheater, at its genesis in 2014, was created to meet a simple goal—to be an outdoor venue that could showcase the beauty of nature while highlighting artists wanting to perform. Since then, it has become “a destination of entertainment here in [the] valley,” according to Erin Margerum who serves on both the center’s Arts & Entertainment Committee and the Board of Trustees.

“It takes a while to build the program and to draw the community and the public into it,” Amphitheater Stage Manager and board member Ray Enders said. “So, I think the humble beginnings gave us a very strong foundation to be able to bring in some national acts and very good local talent.”

Early shows had a capacity of 50 to 80 people, but now crowds reach from 300 to 350.

“We usually ask, ‘who’s new to the center and has never been here before?’ And there’s always a large number of hands in the audience for that,” Dietz said.

One unforeseen plus to being an outdoor venue was its ability to be open during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing entertainment at a time with few other options.

“There were people who came out to the theater because it was the only place they could see live music,” Margerum said. “It afforded us the opportunity for people to sort of exhale and have a normal evening for a couple hours.”

Dietz said the amphitheater has also been a “gateway” to the mission and resources offered by the center as a whole. Last year, Linda suggested the center’s art gallery stay open before concerts to give people something to do while they waited, which had very positive results.

“[We had] more people then than we got during the week,” Linda Enders said. “Plus, we’ve brought in more money just by putting a container out rather than charging.”

The galleries will continue to be free year round, as will the surrounding trails, the playground, and more featured at the center.

“If you come over the mountain, we’ll make it worth your while,” Margerum said.

The Ned Smith Center is located at 176 Water Company Rd., Millersburg. Click here for more information on the entertainment offered by the center and the upcoming concerts.
