With the upcoming school year around the corner, an event this weekend will help students prepare.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of South-Central PA will host its fifth annual free Back-to-School Block Party and Resource Fair on Saturday, July 25th, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1519 N. 3rd St.

Families are invited to attend and get ready for the upcoming school year with complimentary school supplies, books, backpacks, haircuts and hair styling, menstrual supplies, new shoes and more.

“The fact of the matter is that everything’s so expensive,” said MaDonna Awotwi, marketing and communications director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of South-Central PA. “There’s a great need for everything, not just pencils and paper. This event will hopefully put students and families in a better position financially.”

The event will also feature a live DJ, the From the Soul Kitchen food truck, and community organizations and service providers that will connect families with free activities, programs and resources available throughout the region. The fair is free and families do not need to pre-register. Children from ages 7 to 18 can receive supplies.

The event is hosted in partnership with PA STEAM Academy, BullsEye Sneaker Boutique and Cummins and is expected to draw more than 400 attendees.

“We have such dedicated partners, and this is something the community looks forward to every year,” said Awotwi. “We want to provide students with the supplies they need to feel uplifted and empowered.”
